We’re now just a matter of weeks into the new season in the Danish Superliga and red-hot favourites FC Copenhagen have raced into an early lead with two wins from two as they look to regain their crown as champions of Denmark. Here at betting.bet we’ll take an early look at the season ahead, providing insights into the main title challengers as well as the latest outright odds from our partners at SpreadEx.
Why FC Copenhagen Are Odds-on Favourites
FC Copenhagen went into the 2023/24 season eyeing a third successive league title but a poor run of results at the conclusion of both the regular season and championship round cost them the title by a narrow margin. FC Copenhagen led for ten of the regular season’s 22 weeks but their hopes of topping the table were dented by a run of just one point in three matches throughout late November and early december. The poor run of form coincided with the Danish champions taking seven points from three UEFA Champions League group games across the same period to reach the knockout stage at the expense of Manchester United and Galatasaray.
The holders did dust themselves off to charge back to the top of the table with three games to play in the championship round but their title hopes were dashed once more as they ended their campaign with two defeats and a draw in their final three matches.
Despite periods of major inconsistency, FC Copenhagen finished just four points off eventual winners, FC Midtjylland. They are unlikely to replicate their Champions League heroics this season and are expected to right the wrong of last season by regaining their league title. However, the bookies’ title favourites have lost several notable players this summer with the likes of Kamil Grabara, Elias Jelert and Isak Johannesson departing ahead of the new season.
Big-Spending Title Holders
FC Midtjylland claimed a fourth league title in ten seasons in 2023/24 and in a bid to successfully defend a league title for the first time in their short history, the current title holders have splashed out in excess of €11m on new players this summer. Adam Buksa is a particularly exciting signing having joined from French side Lens in a €4m deal. The Polish international spent last season on loan at Turkish side Antalyaspor where he netted 16 times in 33 league games. Buksa also featured for Poland at Euro 2024 and is seen as something of a coup for FC Midtjylland. Joining Buksa at FC Midtjylland are a host of exciting youngsters including Denil Castillo, Ousmane Diao and Kristoffer Askildsen.
FC Midtjylland recorded an impressive return of ten points from a possible twelve in four league games against FC Copenhagen last season and whilst the latter are odds-on favourites to regain their title this season, this is far from a foregone conclusion.
Sandwiched in between Copenhagen and Midtjylland in the league last season were eleven-time champions Brondby and after losing out on what would’ve been just their second league title in 18 years by a single point they will hope to build on what was actually a rather successful campaign. In Jesper Sorensen’s first full season in charge at the club, Brondby recorded their highest points total since 2017/18.
