The Tampa Bay Buccaneers once again have Super Bowl hopes after getting some bad news this offseason that Tom Brady was retiring before he quickly changed his mind. This saw the team climb up the ranks and become one of the betting favorites with DraftKings Sportsbook to be crowned Super Bowl winners.
Brady will now be returning to the Bucs to chase another championship. Why would he not? It's not like Brady had regressed that much to where he is an ineffective NFL quarterback. The Bucs rarely let him get hit, and they still have one of the most talented rosters surrounding him. Winning a Super Bowl in the NFL is not an easy task though. Brady has won seven of them in his career, which includes one with the Bucs in 2020. They are not easy to come by though, and it seems every year teams will have to get lucky in the single-elimination playoff format of the NFL to make it to the Super Bowl. The Bucs will almost undoubtedly be one of the teams at the end of the regular season vying for another Super Bowl.
Brady's Championship Backstory
In Tom Brady's first year with Tampa Bay they won a championship. That was just two seasons ago in 2020. The first career game for another franchise besides the New England Patriots for Tom Brady did not start off well. Brady and the Bucs lost to the New Orleans Saints 23-34. It didn't get much better for them in week five as they lost to the Chicago Bears. They then started to get rolling as their record improved to 6-2. They then had to face the Saints again in week nine and lost this time 38-3. The next three weeks they lost to two more good teams in the Chiefs then the Rams. It was thought that this Bucs team was good but couldn't beat great teams. They still managed to make the Wild Card where they easily beat Washington and then finally beat the Saints in their third try that year. They went on to beat the Packers and then beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl after they also lost to them in the regular season as well. Brady is just on another level in the playoffs.
Bettors Shouldn't Overlook Mike Evans and Chris Godwin
The announcement of Brady's retirement wasn't surprising given his age of 44-years-old, but it was questionable given his situation in Tampa Bay was so good. The Buccaneers still have top receiving talent in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, good quarterback protection, a good defense, and a good head coach. Brady was still at the top of his game as well last year. He led the NFL in passing yards by more than 300 yards and threw the most touchdowns as well. The Bucs were even one of the best teams at protecting their quarterback last year as he was sacked just the 29th most times in the league, even behind some guys who only played 12 games. Brady ultimately decided that he was not done in the NFL likely due to some of these reasons. He should have a good chance at an eighth Super Bowl championship this season.
Tampa Bay are Being Backed by Sports Betting Sites
Currently, before the NFL regular season begins in 2022, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the second-best odds on most sports betting sites to win the Super Bowl. The team with the best odds is the Buffalo Bills, which gives the Bucs the best odds of any team in the NFC to win it all. Tampa Bay was close to making it back to the Super Bowl last season and should feel good about their chances for this upcoming year.
Last year the Bucs lost just four regular season games and made it to the playoffs where they had to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card game. The Bucs were able to make easy work of the Eagles, beating them 31-15 in a game that was never really in question. After that they had to face the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round. The Rams were a good team but the Bucs were the betting favorite in the game. After the Rams came out swinging, the Bucs found themselves down 27-3 in the third quarter. Brady led Tampa Bay on a comeback to actually tie the game with 42 seconds remaining. After a 20-yard and a 44-yard catch from Cooper Kupp, the Rams were able to kick a field goal to win the game in regulation. If that game went to overtime anything could have happened and the Bucs could have been one game away from another Super Bowl appearance.
NFL games are so unpredictable, and especially the closely contested games in the playoffs. With one wrong move a team can go from winning to losing. This is why it is so hard to predict a team to win, it comes down to just one play in a lot of games. Brady and the Bucs are hoping that next year they can get into the playoffs and make all the right plays again like they did in the 2020 season to win a Super Bowl.
Tampa Bay has a clear path to the playoffs this season. Last year their only competition in the AFC South was the New Orleans Saints. The Saints quickly fell out of contention after Jameis Winston got hurt and the Bucs had an easy regular season path to the playoffs. Having a clear path to a division title means that that team only needs to win three or two playoff games to make it to the Super Bowl. Brady should take those odds every time.
While Tom Brady is now 44-years-old, he hasn't looked like he has slowed down at all. Brady never relied on his elite athleticism in his career, he still can strategically move around the pocket and avoid contact though. There also doesn't seem to be much regression in his arm strength either. There were a few games where his accuracy looked off, but he is always able to make adjustments it seems. With Brady back and most of their supporting cast returning, the Bucs look pretty good before the season to make it to another Super Bowl and win it.
