One of the most popular bets to place around the World Cup is wagering on who will win the Golden Boot, or the player who will score the most goals in the tournament. It adds another aspect to the betting game compared to just betting on the team that is expected to win the overall tournament. Every year there is a standout performer who takes home the boot. There will be plenty of star power in Qatar this winter for the World Cup who will be gunning for this honour. We will look at some of the top online betting options from the top countries that could potentially win in the 2022 World Cup in this article.

Harry Kane (England)

Odds: 7/1

The Tottenham striker and England national team captain had a tremendous 2018 World Cup. He led England all the way to the semifinals where they lost to Croatia in extra time. Kane was the Golden Boot winner in the 2018 World Cup with six goals, which was two more than any other player. England is one of the favourites again in the 2022 World Cup, which is important because the further the player's team goes, the more chances they will have to score goals.

Kane is the favourite in many people's eyes to repeat as the Golden Boot winner again in this World Cup. He won't be without challengers though as there are some of football's best players ever in this World Cup as well as some young stars who will be sure to have some impressive tournaments as well.

2. Kylian Mbappe (France)

Odds: 8/1

In Kylian Mbappe's first World Cup ever in 2018 he scored four goals as just a 19-year-old. He is one of football's brightest young stars playing for the Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, and he will make his second appearance in the World Cup for France. France won the World Cup in 2018 with the help of Mbappe and they are expected to be one of the favourites to win it again in the winter of 2022. They would be the first team to repeat as World Cup champions since 1962.

Mbappe is a close second as far as a betting favourite behind Kane. He is one of the most talented and athletic players that will be on the pitch at all times, and he can turn nearly any scenario into a scoring opportunity. There will be plenty of chances in the 2022 World Cup for Mbappe to score a lot of goals.

3. Karim Benzema (France)

Odds: 10/1

Another Frenchmen is high on the list of players who could be in the running towards the end of the tournament for the Golden Boot award. Karim Benzema is currently a striker for La Liga club Real Madrid and now will play for the French national team. In the last World Cup when France won in 2018, Benzema was absent from the team. There are many question marks about why he was not on the team, but now he will play with them to help defend their title in 2022.

Benzema is one of the best forwards in his generation. He will undoubtedly bring additional firepower to this French team. It not only makes them a much more dangerous team than last year, but it also bodes well for Benzema being towards the top of the contenders for the Golden Boot.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Odds: 12/1

Arguably one of the best footballers of all time in Cristiano Ronaldo will play yet again for the Portugal national team. Ronaldo is one of the best goal scorers in history, and he should see plenty of opportunities at shots on goal with this team. Portugal has qualified every year for the World Cup since 2002, and Ronaldo has been a big part of why they have continuously qualified. Ronaldo has played in every World Cup for Portugal since 2006.

While Ronaldo hasn't had much success in the World Cup before (only seven goals all time) he has the ability to score goals in bunches if Portugal makes a deep run in the tournament. The problem for Ronaldo is that Portugal has never been a contender in the World Cup, which limits his chances to score and win the Golden Boot. This could be his final World Cup appearance.

5. Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Odds: 12/1

Between Messi and Ronaldo, you can't talk about the greatest of all time without mentioning at least one of their names. If Argentina goes on a run in the tournament, Messi will have a good chance to be in the running for the Golden Boot. In 2014, Argentina made it all the way to the semifinals and Messi scored four goals. This Argentina team is expected to be a good one as well and Messi could have ample opportunities at shots on goal.

The season with Paris Saint-Germain was not a memorable one for Messi though, and a lot of people believe that he has fallen off a bit in his older age. The captain for the Argentina national team will look to prove people wrong as he attempts to lead Argentina to their first World Cup trophy while he scores a handful of goals along the way.

6. Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

Odds: 14/1

Romelu Lukaku is a Belgium striker who is set to join the Serie A club Inter Milan on a loan in July of 2022. He will be one of the centerpieces of the Belgium team this winter as well for the 2022 World Cup. Belgium is expected to be one of the top teams competing in the tournament and Lukaku will need to play well and score a good amount of goals if they are to make a deep run.

With the team relying on Lukaku to score enough goals to keep them advancing every round, it seems like a good bet that he could win the Golden Boot if they are to get as far as the semifinals. He is a bit of an underdog and not as big of a name as some of the others above him on the list, but Lukaku could be a darkhorse for the award.

7. Junior Neymar (Brazil)

Odds: 12/1

Neymar was once thought of to be the next best player in the world. For a while, he might have been. He is still just 30 years old and will be one of the primary forwards for the Brazil national team. However, he has said recently that this will likely be his last World Cup, and he is not as committed to football as he once was.

Brazil is expected to be one of the favourites to win the 2022 World Cup though, and if they make it to the finals like the odds makers are predicting, Neymar should have a good chance at the Golden Boot. He is still a solid player and was able to score 13 goals this year with Paris Saint-Germain in 22 matches.

8. Raheem Sterling (England)

Odds: 28/1

The other player on England who has a chance at the Golden Boot will be Raheem Sterling. He went scoreless in the 2018 World Cup as Harry Kane covered much of the scoring for England with six goals. Sterling played just 451 minutes in the 2018 tournament compared to some others on England who played as much as 645.

Sterling is expected to have a bigger role for England in the 2022 World Cup and could very well be on the recipient of a lot of passes from Kane and others to set him up for goals this time around. For one of the favourites in England to go far in this tournament, Sterling will need to score and could be a candidate for the Golden Boot.

9. Diogo Jota (Portugal)

Odds: 33/1

This will be Jota's first appearance in the World Cup as he joined the Portuguese national team in 2019, one year after the previous World Cup. He will be a key piece to this team serving as another goal scorer and playmaker alongside Ronaldo for Portugal. For Jota to make a run for the Golden Boot, Portugal will have to make a long run in the tournament. They are expected to be a top-10 contending team in the 2022 World Cup.

Jota's ability to win the Golden Boot will also rely on Ronaldo being more of a distributor than a goal scorer.

10. Vinicius Junior (Brazil)

Odds: 25/1

Aside from Neymar, Brazil's other top option to win the Golden Boot will be Jose Vinicius Junior. He is just 21 years old but will play a pivotal role for Brazil if they are to make a run at winning their first World Cup since 2002. With Neymar possibly taking a backseat to others as the leading attacker, Vinicius could step up in a big way for this team. That could include being the team's top goal scorer and possibly winning the Golden Boot.

A good contrarian bet to Neymar could be taking Jose Vinicius Junior to score the most goals in the 2022 World Cup. Brazil has the best odds to win the World Cup this winter and Vinicius Junior will likely play a big role as a playmaker and goalscorer if they are indeed able to win it.
