LEONARDO BLU looks better than a mark of 79 and, after getting very little luck in his first two handicaps, this could be the day he proves it. Tom Clover's three year old showed a good level of ability before going handicapping. He chased home a useful winner at Doncaster on his second start before getting off the mark at Nottingham, staying on strongly to prevail in a race that has worked out particularly well. Things have not really fallen his way since. He was short of room when trying to make his challenge in a valuable Class 3 at Goodwood and then shaped better than fourth suggests at Salisbury, travelling nicely for much of the contest before having to make his effort away from the favoured part of the track. The handicapper has nevertheless dropped him from an opening 82 to 79, and that is beginning to look generous. He has already recorded an RPR of 89 and a Topspeed figure of 81, so there is evidence in the book that he is capable of winning from this sort of rating. Today's 1m2f should suit him better than the longer Goodwood trip and he drops into Class 4 company on good to firm ground, conditions under which he has already shown plenty of ability. He has still only had six starts and, unlike several of these, there should be more to come. With Robert Havlin taking over and his mark continuing to move in the right direction, Leonardo Blu looks ready to put those frustrating handicap runs behind him.

Wilbur 4/1
Daniel Muscutt/Harry Eustace
Live price from William Hill
WILBUR has been getting better with every run and could have been handed a very workable opening mark for his nursery debut. Harry Eustace's Kingman gelding has improved his finishing position on each of his three starts, going from fourth to third before being beaten only a neck over 7f at this track last time. He travelled nicely into that race and was only narrowly denied by La Fuerza, with the pair pulling clear enough to suggest there was plenty of substance to the effort. The return to Wolverhampton is an obvious positive, but the step up to 1m and a half furlong could be even more important. Wilbur has looked as though a longer trip would suit and there is enough stamina on the dam's side of his pedigree to give confidence that he will see it out. He has also been gelded during his 83 day absence, which offers another possible source of improvement, while Daniel Muscutt takes over for the first time. An opening mark of 79 does not look overly generous, but Wilbur has already produced an RPR of 85 and remains completely unexposed after only three runs. Solar Swing is respected and could also improve for the longer trip, but Wilbur has proven course form, a progressive profile and several reasons to take another step forward. He looks capable of making a winning handicap debut.
