About Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot’s history dates back to the 18th century and up until 1939 this was the only fixture held at the iconic Ascot Racecourse. For glamour, fashion and social prestige, Royal Ascot is second to none. However, the meeting is far bigger than just a date on the UK’s social calendar. Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable race meeting with a staggering amount of prize money on offer across five days of top-class flat racing. There are eight Group 1 races in total with at least one scheduled for each of the meeting’s five days.
Scheduled for mid-June, Royal Ascot runs from Tuesday to Saturday. The meeting gets underway with the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes; one of three Group 1 races on day one. The Queen Anne Stakes is raced over a straight one mile and open to horses aged four years and over. Past winners include Frankel and Baaeed whilst Frankie Dettori has ridden a record seven Queen Anne winners.
The King’s Stand Stakes is the second Group 1 of the day and this red-hot race is contested over the shortest 5f distance. Open to horses aged three and above and created in 1960, twelve horses have won this race on two occasions. Three have achieved the feat in the 21st century, including Equiano (2008 & 2010), Sole Power (2013 & 2014) and Blue Point (2018 & 2019).
The feature race on day one of the meeting is the St James’s Palace Stakes. Open to three-year-old colts and contested over 7f, the St James’s Palace Stakes often attracts runners from the year’s 2000 Guineas and Irish 2000 Guineas, including each of the race’s past four winners.
There’s only one Group 1 race on Wednesday; the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. First contested in 1862, the 1m 1f race is open to horses aged four years and older with weight allowances offered not just for fillies but for entries from the Southern Hemisphere.
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes has been won by some of the best horses to grace the turf. Brigadier Gerard, Dubai Millennium and Ouija Board are among its previous winners, whilst Love won the race in 2021, having landed both the 1000 Guineas and The Oaks in 2020.
Thursday at Royal Ascot is Ladies Day, and as it is the most glamorous race day of all, Ladies Day is also Gold Cup Day. Contested over 2m 3f, the Gold Cup is the most prestigious race for stayers on the UK’s flat racing calendar.
Open to horses aged four years and older, the Gold Cup dates back to 1807. A total of 22 horses have claimed multiple Gold Cups with three horses winning three or more. Sagaro (1975 - 1977) was the first horse to earn a hat-trick of Gold Cup wins, an achievement matched by Stradivarius between 2018 and 2020. However, the horse with the most race wins is four-time winner, Yeats having dominated between 2006 and 2009.
The Gold Cup is the first leg of the UK’s Stayers’ Triple Crown; followed later in the year by the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup. Stradivarius became the seventh horse to win the Triple Crown in 2019. Le Moss achieved the feat in back-to-back years in 1979 and 1980.
Friday boasts arguably the strongest card across the entire meeting with five group races, including two Group 1s. The Commonwealth Cup is a relatively new addition to Royal Ascot having been introduced in 2015. Contested over 6f and open to three-year-olds, despite being in its infancy, the race has already established itself as one of the most prestigious sprint races for three-year-olds. Past race winners include subsequent Cartier Champion Sprinter award winners Muhaarar and Quiet Reflection.
The other Group 1 race on Friday is the Coronation Stakes. First established in 1840, the Coronation Stakes is a 7f sprint for three-year-old fillies. Like the St James’s Palace Stakes, this race attracts a large number of previous 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas entries. Tahiyra had, in fact, won both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas before landing the Coronation Stakes in 2023.
The final day of Royal Ascot features six more races, including the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Established in 1868, the race was originally open to three-year-olds but was restricted to horses aged four and over upon the creation of the Commonwealth Cup in 2015. Having been created as the All-Aged Stakes before being renamed the Cork and Orrery Stakes in 1971, the race was promoted to Group 1 status in 2002 and renamed once more to become known as the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
Contested over a distance of 6f, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes forms part of the Global Sprint Challenge. The late Lester Piggott saddled a record ten wins in the race, whilst Vincent O’Brien is the leading trainer with five previous wins.
Royal Ascot Betting Offers
Many UK betting sites will ramp up their promotional offerings in the lead-up to Royal Ascot. This is to maximise on the event, encourage new customers and ensure existing players remain loyal. Here are just a few of the most commonly offered Ascot betting promotions:
Ascot Free Bets: Ascot free bets allow racing punters to back their selections for free. While some free bet credits will have deposit requirements, they are worth claiming. With Ascot being such a focal racing event, many bookies promote Ascot free bets to BOTH new and existing players. Be sure to read the terms and conditions before claiming any horse racing free bets from UK betting sites.
Ascot Extra Places: Each-way betting is hugely popular for high-profile racing events, including the eight Group 1 races across Royal Ascot. For this reason, make bookies feature Extra Places offers. This is where an online bookie will pay out on more places than usual.
BOG: In an attempt to compete with competitors, many bookmakers will offer Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) on selected Ascot horse racing bets. When claiming this offer, players will be paid out at the best odds. If the SP is greater than the odds at the point you placed the bet, these bookmakers will pay out at this higher price, subsequently increasing your profits.
