Chelsea well positioned to reach Carabao Cup Final
Tottenham Hotspur host Chelsea on Wednesday in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Chelsea are in the driving seat ahead of the return fixture having claimed a deserved 2-0 first leg win at Stamford Bridge. However, the Blues progress to next month's final is far from guaranteed. We'll preview the evening's action from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, bringing odds from our betting partners at BoyleSports.
Team News
Spurs' preparations have been rocked by the news that South Korean forward, Heung-Min Son has been ruled out for several weeks. Cristian Romero remains absent whilst both Eric Dier and Steven Bergwijn are doubtful.
Chelsea will be without first-choice goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy as he is away on international duty. Defenders Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah remain in the treatment room whilst Thomas Tuchel will hope both N'Golo Kante and Thiago Silva recover from Covid in time to take part.
Spurs vs Chelsea: Head-to-head
Spurs won three consecutive games against Chelsea between April 2018 and January 2019 but they have not won over 90 minutes since. Spurs have failed to score a single goal in their last four meetings with their London rivals.
Betting Tips
Chelsea have already beaten Spurs twice this season without conceding a goal. If Spurs are to make it to next month's Wembley final they'll need to score at least two goals; something they've not achieved against Chelsea since November 2018. Therefore, Chelsea seem nailed on to progress but can't be backed at 1/20!
With so much at stake, recent EFL Cup semi-finals have been low-scoring affairs. However, more often than not the second leg produces more goals than the first. We're backing over 2.5 match goals at 20/23. You may want to double up and go for Chelsea to win and over 2.5 match goals at a generous 13/5.
In the absence of Heung-Min Son, even more goal-scoring responsibility will fall on Harry Kane. The England captain has finally found some league form, scoring three in his last four matches. If you're confident of Spurs progressing then don't ignore the 11/10 available for Kane to score at any time. Alternatively, Kane is 11/2 to score two or more.
We're not expecting Spurs to reach the Carabao Cup final and believe Chelsea will record yet another win against their bitter rivals. Back in the team following a mini exile, Romelu Lukaku had several chances to score in the first leg and was on target in last weekend's FA Cup win against Chesterfield. The Belgian forward has to be backed in the any time scorer market on Wednesday. Lukaku is 13/8 to score in 90 minutes whilst he is 5/1 to open the scoring.
Match Odds
90 minutes:
- Spurs: 11/5
- Draw: 23/10
- Chelsea: 13/10
To reach the final:
- Spurs: 9/1
- Chelsea: 1/20
