After years of back-and-forth, Paul and Fury will finally settle their differences with a boxing match this Sunday at the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia.
The WBC has unveiled the unique belt that will be awarded to the victor of this weekend's bout between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury.
After years of back-and-forth, Paul and Fury will finally settle their differences with a boxing match this Sunday at the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia. There were supposed to be two fights before they were cancelled, but that only added to the mystery and intrigue surrounding the upcoming bout.
In spite of his perfect record as a professional boxer, Paul has never faced a boxer in his career, instead facing former mixed martial arts superstars like Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Ben Askren. Even though Fury is undefeated (8-0), his fighting resume pales in comparison to that of his heavyweight champion brother Tyson (20-0).
The WBC has also made available a unique championship belt for the fight's victor, dubbed the "Diriyah Champion," which will be presented to the winner on Sunday night. The belt, which features the flags of every country in the world, was clearly imported specifically for this fight.
The belt was first displayed to the public during the most recent press conference, with both fighters holding onto it. The WBC is one of the four boxing authorities, along with the WBA, the IBF, and the WBO. But, it is the only one of the four to reveal where Paul would be ranked if he reigns supreme against Fury this weekend.
Derek Chisora has voiced his displeasure with this potential decision, saying that it is demeaning to "true" boxing fighters.
“That's not fair. There's other boxers who have been slaving themselves, making weight, fighting and because he's boxed two fighters they give him a WBC ranking? No, it's unfair.“If they do that, I urge everyone in the WBC rankings – drop the belts, who cares?“Belts do not pay the bills for most fighters. As Mike Tyson says, it's garbage. Most of it is garbage to be honest with you.”
