TPC Sawgrass will host the Players Championship this week with 43 of the world's top 50 players set to take part. Regarded as golf's most prestigious tournament outside of the four majors, the Players Championship is often labelled as the unofficial โ€˜fifth major'. The four-day tournament is scheduled to take place between March 9th and 12th this year and here at betting.bet we'll be previewing this much-anticipated event. In addition to an in-depth preview of the tournament, you can find the very best free bet offers and up to date tournament odds from our betting partners at BoyleSports.

LIV Golf Exiles

There are some notable absentees from this year's Players Championship with any player associated with the controversial LIV Golf tour banned from participating at Sawgrass this week. Five of the top ten from last year's competition amongst those banned from competing this year. Amongst those to miss out is defending champion, Cameron Smith. Australian, Smith also won The Open in 2022 and would've been well-fancied to become the first back-go-back winner of the Players Championship.

Tiger Woods Resting Up

Two-time Players Championship winner, Tiger Woods will sit out this week's competition as he instead looks ahead to next month's Masters. The 2001 and 2013 champion looked set to compete at Sawgrass after an encouraging return in February's Genesis Invitational but Augusta now seems more likely.

Market Leaders

There's a three-way battle at the top of the betting market with world number one, Jon Rahm grouped with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. The tournament winner may well come from this leading trio whilst the number one spot in the world rankings could also be up for grabs for any of this leading group.

McIlroy moved to the top of the betting market after finishing tied-second in the recent Arnold Palmer International. Scheffler finished one shot behind McIlroy at Bay Hill and will be keen to overturn that result. Rahm recorded his worst finish since last July after finishing with successive scores of 76. However, the world number one had led after the first round and has won five of his last ten tournaments so disregard him at your peril.

Outside the Big Three

The Players Championship has been held at the same venue for over forty years which means that past Players Championship form can be a great indicator of which golfers could be in contention for this year's trophy. Max Homa finished T13 in 2022 after carding an incredible 66 in his last round. Homa showed real career progression in 2022 as he achieved personal best finishes in three of the four majors. The 32-year-old won the Farmers Insurance Open in January and looks great value at odds in excess of 20/1.
