Tyson Fury will make his long-awaited return to the ring on October 28th as he takes on MMA star, Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia. The Gypsy King has been away from the ring since defending his WBC heavyweight title against Dillian Whyte last December. As we look forward to October’s huge bout, here at betting.bet we’ll discuss where the fight could potentially be won and lost. Inactive Fury
If we’re honest, Francis Ngannou was nobody’s preferred opponent for world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury. However, negotiations over a potential undisputed fight against Oleksandr Usyk collapsed earlier this year. There were also suggestions that Fury could be involved in a British super-fight against Anthony Joshua but that bout also failed to materialise. One thing is for sure, Fury needs to be more active and with all the division’s big players otherwise engaged, a lucrative fight against Ngannou makes sense, from a financial perspective at least. Tyson Fury’s WBC title is not on the line but this is a fully-sanctioned heavyweight fight, not an exhibition as many had feared. It will however be contested over a maximum of ten rounds.
Ngannou Pedigree
The self-proclaimed “baddest man on the planet”, Francis Ngannou may not have ever boxed professionally but he has forged a formidable reputation within the mixed martial arts world. Ngannou departed UFC as the reigning heavyweight champion having won six consecutive fights. Ngannou’s unbeaten run in the octagon stretches back over five years.
Betting Tips
On paper, Fury versus Ngannou looks to be a mismatch. In one corner we have the lineal heavyweight champion of the world, a fighter with 34 undefeated professional bouts to his name in a career spanning 15 years. In the opposite corner is a fighter with no previous professional boxing experience. Fury to win, albeit at short odds of 1/9 could be worth every penny that you stake.
In the octagon, fights are contested over no more than six round which obviously creates question marks around Ngannou’s ability to go deep into the fight in Saudi Arabia. A late Fury stoppage seems like the most sensible betting strategy. Tyson Fury’s last four fights have all been won by stoppage in round six or later. Fury to win in rounds 6-10 will be a rock-solid bet.
However, all three defeats inflicted on Ngannou in UFC came via a points decision. His presumed punch durability could not only rule out a potential early stoppage but it could rule out a Fury stoppage win altogether. Fury has gone the distance ten times in his previous 34 fights and he could ease his way to a points win against the boxing novice.
Five of Ngannou’s last six fights in the UFC ended with a win via a knockout punch. That undeniable punching power makes this clash with Tyson Fury a fascinating one. Fury undeniably boasts superior boxing ability but we have to at least give Ngannou a ‘puncher’s chance’. Ngannou is not going to win this on points; Ngannou to win by knockout could be worth a small stake.
