Al-Ittihad: Champions and favourites

With so much transfer activity in Saudi Arabia, last year’s Pro League standings may not hold too much significance. However, Al-Ittihad were deserved league winners, having lost just twice in 30 matches. The side managed by former Wolves and Spurs boss, Nuno Espirito Santo, have recruited incredibly well in the off-season. Last season’s Pro League champions drafted in last year’s Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema whilst they’ve also splashed out on a huge salary for fellow French World Cup winner, N’Golo Kante. Fabinho and Jota cost in excess of £75m as they arrived from Liverpool and Celtic respectively.

Al-Ittihad are unsurprisingly, 15/8 favourites to win the league for the second consecutive season. New marquee signing, Karim Benzema is 5/4 to claim the league’s Golden Boot.

Al-Nassr finished second last season and will be quietly confident of going one better this season. Captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr have drafted in a host of major names from throughout Europe this summer. The most notable acquisition is Sadio Mane from Bayern Munich. The Senegalese international will be joined in Riyadh by the likes of Alex Telles and Marcelo Brozovic. Brazilian, Talisca has scored twenty league goals in two consecutive seasons yet seems to have gone under the radar in the top scorer market at 20/1.

The Saudi Pro League’s most successful ever side are Al-Hilal. The Riyadh-based club have won the Pro League 18 times and finished second on a further 15 occasions. Last season, Al-Hilal finished second in the Saudi Pro League and look well-equipped for another strong campaign. Former Fenerbahce, Benfica and Sporting boss, Jorge Jesus he’s back for a second spell in charge at the club having managed Al-Hilal between June 2018 and January 2019. Al-Hilal boast arguably, the strongest midfield in the division with a central midfield partnership of Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Al-Ahli’s return to the top-flight

Al-Ahli were one of the four founder members of the Saudi Pro League but were relegated to the First Division at the end of the 2021/22 season. Having earned an immediate return to the top flight., Al-Ahli have been extremely busy in the transfer market this summer. The three-time Saudi Pro League winners have drafted in a host of household names ahead of their return to the top table. Former English Premier League trio, Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez and Allan Saint-Maximin could forge a ferocious attacking trio for the newly-promoted side whilst former Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy has swapped London for Jeddah.

It’s not just the players heading to the Middle East from Europe with several high-profile managers set to be involved in the Saudi Pro League. The aforementioned, Nuno Espirito Santo is about to embark on his second season in Saudi Arabia and will be joined on the touchline by ex-English Premier League managers, Steven Gerrard and Slavan Bilic.

Gerrard takes over at Al-Ettifaq on the back of the club’s seventh-placed finish last season. The former Rangers and Aston Villa boss moved quickly to draft in Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson whilst he also recruited Scottish international, Jack Hendry from Club Brugge.
