Season after season the Sky Bet Championship proves to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable leagues, not just in England but throughout Europe. This season is expected to be no different with some huge clubs in the English second tier. We’re now matches into the new season and the league is already starting to take shape with some of the pre-season favourites already prominent in the league table. However, with 44 matches still to play, the race for promotion is still wide-open. Here at betting.bet we have provided the latest outright betting odds in the Sky Bet Championship, courtesy of our betting partners at William Hill.

Fallen Giants

The three sides to drop out of the Premier League inevitably sit at the head of the outright betting markets.

Leicester City find themselves in the second tier less than a decade on from their famous Premier League title win. There has been a mass exodus at the Foxes with numerous first team players either moving on or being moved on. Players to depart on a free include Youri Tielemens, Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Atoze Perez, Ryan Bertrand, Jonny Evans and Nampalys Mendy.

Leicester City also managed to accumulate almost £90m in transfer fees following the sales of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes to Spurs and Newcastle United respectively. New manager, Enzo Maresca has been allowed to reinvest almost half of the transfer fees earned back into the squad. England internationals, Harry Winks and Conor Coady are shrewd signings whilst Stephy Mavididi and Mads Hermansen have slotted straight into the Leicester City first team.

There remains speculation surrounding the likes of Timothy Castagne and Kelechi Iheanacho but if Leicester City can retain the majority of their relegated squad, an immediate return to the top-flight looks likely.

Southampton’s new manager, Russell Martin has a major rebuilding job on his hands with Romeo Lavia set to follow James Ward-Prowse, Tino Livramento and Mohammed Salisu out of the exit door at St Mary’s. Incoming transfers have been minimal up to now and links to Everton defender, Mason Holgate will not do much to lift the mood at St Mary’s. Southampton are unbeaten in their first two games, but needed a 97th minute equaliser to rescue a point in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Norwich City last weekend.

Leeds United are the only relegated side that didn’t win either of their first two matches back in the Championship. Leeds United had to come from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Cardiff City on the opening weekend before they were beaten 1-0 at Birmingham City last time out.

There has been a mass exodus of players from Elland Road this summer yet unlike Leicester City and Southampton, Leeds United have barely recouped any money through transfer fees. Numerous internationals have departed this summer but the vast majority have left on loan, with only Rodrigo (£3m) leaving for a fee of any significance.

Tyler Adams looks set to depart with Bournemouth the likely destination for the United States international. Adams has a £20m release fee which could be reinvested into the playing squad. Meanwhile, Wilfried Gnonto has refused to pay in an attempt to engineer a move out of the club. Ethan Ampadu was a smart signing for Leeds United. In the current climate, £7m for a 22-year-old with 44 caps for Wales is excellent business.

Daniel Farke has been appointed as the new Leeds United manager for this coming season. The German brings bags of Championship experience having won the title twice with Norwich City in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

Last season’s League One winners, Ipswich Town were backed by many to earn back-to-back promotions and the Tractor Boys are one of only two sides to take six points from their opening two matches. Manager, Kieran McKenna has been a revelation since joining the club in December 2021 and guided Ipswich Town to promotion in his first full season in charge.

Jack Taylor and George Hirst were brought in during the summer for a combined fee of approximately £3m and both players have slotted straight into the Ipswich Town starting eleven.

Coventry City fell agonisingly short or promotion as they lost the play-off final to Luton Town. The Sky Blues will hope for another promotion push this season by the loss of last season’s top scorer, Viktor Gyokeres and back-to-back player of the year, Gustavo Hamer will severely dent their prospects. Signings such as Ellis Simms and Haji Wright are positive moves but we’re not expecting Coventry City to emulate their 2022/23 season.
