We’re one round of matches into the new Premier League season and several teams are already feeling the pressure as they prepare for a fight to avoid relegation from the top-flight. Traditionally the newly-promoted clubs struggle at the wrong end of the table but all three beat the drop last season as Leicester City, Southampton and Leeds United slipped into the Sky Bet Championship. Here at betting.bet we’re going to take a closer look at the relegation odds, providing odds from our betting partners at Unibet.
Luton Town are back in the top-flight for the first time in more than three decades but their spell in the Premier League is likely to be short-lived. The Hatters punched above their weight financially in the Championship and the step up to the Premier League creates a further gulf in finances. Rob Edwards’ side have spent less than £20m strengthening their squad with the likes of Ryan Giles, Mads Andersen and Tahith Chong. Ross Barkley adds some much needed experience to the Luton Town squad having signed on a free transfer from French side, Nice.
Sheffield United have endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market with very few new faces arriving at Bramall Lane. Two of last season’s strongest performers have also departed the club. Player of the year, Iliman Ndiaye moved to Marseille whilst Sander Berge swapped Yorkshire for Lancashire as he signed for relegation rivals, Burnley. Gustavo Hamer looks a shrewd acquisition but like Luton Town, Sheffield United probably do not have a strong enough squad to survive in an ultra-competitive Premier League.
With Luton Town and Sheffield United widely expected to fill two of the three relegation spots, there are several sides hoping to avoid taking that one remaining place in next season’s Championship. Everton’s lack of a firepower is a real concern. The Toffees cannot rely on injury-prone forward, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay’s move from Brighton & Hove Albion has proved a failure. Everton’s best chance of survival is centred around an airtight defence. Under 2.5 match goals could be a solid bet in most matches involving Sean Dyche’s side this season.
Wolves briefly flirted with relegation last season before Julen Lopetegui steered them comfortably into mid-table. However, a frustrating summer that saw Lopetegui replaced by Gary O’Neill and zero new faces arrive at Molineux has left the Midlands club vulnerable again. Wolves fans will take encouragement from their performance at Manchester United on the opening weekend but they could be in for a long season.
Twelve months ago most people tipped Nottingham Forest for relegation but Steve Cooper steered the club to a 16th-place finish. Cooper has expressed his frustration at the lack of signings made by the club this summer yet over £40m has been shelled out on the likes of Anthony Elanga, Chris Wood, Matt Turner and Ola Aina.
Taiwo Awoniyi ended the last season in a rich vein of form in front of goal and was again on the scoresheet in their opening weekend defeat at Arsenal. In the Premier League, goalscorers are worth their weight in gold and the Nigerian international could provide the goals required to keep Nottingham Forest in the top-flight for a third season.
Bournemouth are a fascinating proposition and one that bettors are torn on. Whilst many have tipped the Cherries for relegation, they have also been mooted as potential dark horses by a large percentage of experts. Bournemouth finished five points clear of relegation last season in fifteenth position yet they parted ways with manager, Gary O’Neill over the summer. Andoni Iraola has been drafted in to replace O’Neill with Bournemouth’s ambitious owners hoping to push on towards a top-half finish.
The Cherries have spent close to £100m on the likes of Hamed Traore, Alex Scott, Max Aarons, Justin Kluivert, Milos Kerkez and Romain Faivre whilst they’re also close to wrapping up a £20m deal for Tyler Adams. Whilst the bulk of Bournemouth’s summer signings boast a big reputation throughout footballing circles, there’s an obvious lack of Premier League experience both on and off the pitch.
Fulham won 1-0 at Everton last weekend which saw their odds of relegation drift out from 3/1 to 11/2. Yet we’re not entirely convinced by the Cottagers. Talismanic forward, Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set to seal a move to the Saudi Pro League with replacement, Raul Jimenez not the player he was before his serious head injury. The signing of Adama Traore on a free transfer is smart business whilst new £20m defender, Calvin Bassey still has the potential to be a real top player, despite a difficult spell at Ajax.
Fulham play Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Spurs and Brighton before the end of October. If they still have their heads above water going into a modest run of fixtures over Christmas then they’ll be absolutely fine. Our feeling is that by the turn of the year, manager, Marco Silva may have moved on and Fulham could be embroiled in a real battle to avoid the drop.
