US Open History and 2022 Recap
Three players have won five US Open titles in the open era with Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer sharing the record.
Unsurprisingly, Novak Djokovic is the most successful player still active having won the tournament three times in 2011, 2015 and 2018.
Last year’s tournament saw current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz claim a maiden Grand Slam title. The 20-year-old has since won a Wimbledon title and he’s amongst the favourites again this year. However no man has successfully defended the US Open title since Roger Federer won five in a row between 2004 and 2008.
Two-horse Race?
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have between them won the last five Grand Slam tournaments. Alcaraz won last year’s US Open and won at Wimbledon last month. Sandwiched in between those wins, Novak Djokovic won this year’s Australian Open and French Open titles as well as the 2022 Wimbledon title. Inevitably, the pair are well clear of the pack in the outright betting market.
Novak Djokovic missed the 2022 US Open due to the United States’ Covid-19 restrictions. His last appearance at Flushing Meadows was in 2021 when he made the final. The 23-time Grand Slam winner has won just three US Open titles, yet he has been a losing finalist on six further occasions. Since 2006, Djokovic has reached at least the semi-final stage in all but two of the US Open tournaments he’s been involved in. The two exceptions came in successive years in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, Djokovic retired in his round four match against Stan Wawrinka with a shoulder injury. Twelve months later, Djokovic was disqualified at the same fourth road stage after he hit a ball in frustration, accidentally striking a lines-woman.
Rising star, Carlos Alcaraz has only entered the US Open on two previous occasions. The Spaniard rose to prominence in 2021 when he became the youngest player to ever defeat a top-3 ranked player at the US Open and the youngest male Grand Slam quarter-finalist since 1989. Alcaraz retired early from his quarter-final that year but returned twelve months later to win a first Grand Slam title.
Outside Chance?
Statistically, the US Open is the most unpredictable of the four Grand Slams. The last eleven editions of the event have produced eight different winners, including each of the last five.
The bookies’ odds suggest that 2021 champion, Daniil Medvedev is best positioned to challenge the top two. Medvedev reached the semi-final at Wimbledon last month, hinting that he could be back to his best. However, he’s far from the only player capable of challenging Alcaraz and Djokovic. Casper Ruud is still searching for a maiden Grand Slam title. The Norwegian has reached the final of three of the past six Grand Slam tournaments, including last year’s US Open.
Jannik Sinner followed up his Wimbledon semi-final by claiming a first ATP 1000 title in Toronto earlier this month. Sinner was subsequently eliminated early at the Cincinnati Masters but he’s a real dark-horse for the US Open.
Holger Rune is one of the real rising stars of men’s tennis and there was a feeling that this year’s US Open could’ve been a real breakthrough tournament. Rune has reached the quarter-finals in successive Grand Slams having progressed to the last eight at both the French Open and Wimbledon. However, he retired early from the Cincinnati Masters and backing him to win at Flushing Meadows soon so after that would be a big risk.
