The final tennis Grand Slam of the year draws to a close this weekend and there’s a home favourite in the final of the women’s singles competition. 19-year-old American, Coco Gauff has eyes on a first ever Grand Slam as she takes on world number two, Aryna Sabalenka. Route to the final
Aryna Sabalenka had arguably the easiest route to Saturday’s final. The Belarusian played three successive unseeded players in the opening three rounds before a fourth round tie against Daria Kasatkina. Kasatkina may be ranked number 14 in the world but she has lost in the first round of the US Open in three of the past four years.
Sabalenka then took on Zheng Qinwen who was playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final. 2017 US Open finalist, Madison Keys gave Sabalenka a mighty scare in the semi-final having won the first set 6-0. Sabalenka bounced back to win the next two sets but each went to a tie-breaker.
Having safely progressed through the first three rounds, Coco Gauff met wild card entry and two-time US Open finalist, Caroline Wozniacki in round four. Gauff got the better of Wozniacki, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
In round four, Coco Gauff expected to meet world number one and defending US Open champion, Iga Swiatek but the 22-year-old suffered a shock third round defeat against Jelena Ostapenko. Coco Gauff eased past the 2017 French Open champion, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarter-final before recording another straight sets win against world number ten, Karolina Muchova in Thursday’s semi-final.
Pre-US Open Form
Aryna Sabalenka has enjoyed a superb 2023, reaching at least the semi-final in all four Grand Slam tournaments. The Miami-based 25-year-old won the Australian Open and was a losing semi-finalist over the summer in both the French Open and Wimbledon.
Aryna Sabalenka has contested three previous Grand Slam finals (one singles and two doubles) and has won all three.
Coco Gauff reached the quarter-final of last year’s US Open and also reached the last-eight in this year’s French Open. Gauff bounced back from a disappointing first round defeat at Wimbledon to win the Cincinnati Masters title at the end of August.
