The 2023 Ryder Cup takes place this coming weekend with the 44th edition of the famous tournament set to be staged at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy. As the USA aim defend the title they won in 2021, here at betting.bet we’ll provide a brief history of the Ryder Cup, betting tips ahead of this year’s competition and the latest odds and free bet offers from our betting partners at BoyleSports.

2023 Ryder Cup Venue

The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club has been chosen to host this year’s Ryder Cup, meaning the tournament will be staged in Italy for the first time. The venue, just northeast of Rome is the home of the Italian Open. This year’s Italian Open was won by Adrian Meronk. The highest-ranked player at the tournament set to compete at the Ryder Cup was Europe’s Nicolai Hojgaard who finished tied-fifth.

The Teams

Henrik Stenson was initially named as captain for the European side but was subsequently removed having joined LIV Golf. Stenson was replaced by Luke Donald with vice-captains, Thomas Bjorn and Edoardo Molinari retained by Donald. Jose Maria Olazabal have also been confirmed as vice-captains for Europe.

Two-time major winner, Zach Johnson has been named as USA captain with the team’s vice-captains including Steve Stricker, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Fred Couples and Stewart Cink.

Each captain was given six picks for their respective Ryder Cup teams. The captain’s picks for team Europe include Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg. They’ll be joined by Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Robert MacIntyre, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Team USA’s captain’s picks include Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas. They’ll be joined on the visiting team by Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele.

2021 Recap

Team USA claimed a convincing 19-9 win in 2021; the largest Ryder Cup winning margin since 1967. Dustin Johnson scored maximum points from his five matches in 2021 but the five-time Ryder Cup squad member is a notable absentee this year.

Only three European players won their singles matches in 2021 with only Rory McIlroy returning this year. Jon Rahm was arguably Europe’s best performing player in 2021, earning 3.5 points from five matches.

Ryder Cup: Betting Tips

Home advantage has been a major factor in deciding past Ryder Cup competitions so it is no surprise to see Europe slight favourites in the outright betting. The USA have not won a Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993.

The venue could also be a big factor this week. The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club has played host to the Italian Open in each of the past three years yet not a single member of the USA team has ever played the course. Seven members of team Europe have competed at Marco Simone including four of the top eight finishers in 2022.

Nicolai Hojgaard won the 2021 Italian Open and was positioned fifth back at Marco Simone in May in this year’s competition. Hojgaard is 33/1 to finish as Europe’s top points scorer and with each-way bets paying out for the top three places, this could prove superb value.
