Group stage recap
Group A
Bayern Munich eased to first place in Group A but the major talking point in the group was the dismal performance of three-time winners, Manchester United. The Red Devils conceded 15 goals and earned just one win as they sank to bottom of Group A and out of Europe altogether.
A 1-0 win on match day six saw FC Copenhagen leapfrog Galatasaray and clinch second place in the group behind runaway group winners, Bayern Munich.
Group B
Arsenal were group winners in Group B thanks to a perfect record of three wins from three home matches. The Gunners won just one of their three away group games but reached the knockout stages with a game to spare.
PSV Eindhoven recovered from a slow start to their campaign to join Arsenal in the round of 16. The 1988 champions failed to win any of their first three group games but seven points from their final three matches saw them finish second behind Arsenal.
Group C
Group C proved to be fairly routine for both Real Madrid and Napoli. Real Madrid charged to top spot in Group C with six wins from six matches.
Whilst Napoli lost home and away to Real Madrid, the Italians did take ten points from twelve available in their other four group matches.
Group D
Group D was arguably the tightest group of all with just two matches won by more than a single goal. Real Sociedad and Inter Milan progressed from Group D. Both sides ended level on twelve points (three wins and three draws) with the Spaniards topping the group on goal difference.
Group E
Atletico Madrid clinched top spot in Group E with fourteen points from a possible eighteen. The Spanish giants remain unbeaten but dropped points away to both Lazio (1-1) and Celtic (2-2).
Lazio also booked a place in the knockout stage with a game to spare. The Italians lost two of their three away group matches but progressed thanks to their solid home form.
Group F
Labelled the ‘Group of Death’, Group F certainly lived up to its billing with twists and turns aplenty.
Newcastle United were the early group leaders having taken four points from their first two matches. However, Eddie Howe’s side would eventually finish bottom of Group F. The Magpies’ sliding doors moment was the controversial last-gasp penalty conceded against PSG in Paris.
Paris Saint-Germain would eventually limp over the line in second place to book their place in the round of 16. Borussia Dortmund topped Group F despite failing to score a single goal in any of their first two matches.
Group G
Holders, Manchester City reached the knockout stages with a perfect record of six wins from six. Pep Guardiola’s Man City were the highest-scoring side in the group stage, averaging exactly three goals per game.
RB Leipzig lost home and away and Manchester City but the Germans won all of their other four matches to comfortably take second place.
Red Star Belgrade were the worst-performing side in the group stage, taking just one point from their six matches.
Group H
Barcelona limped to top spot in Group H despite losing two of their final three group matches. The Spanish giants finished level with Porto on twelve points from six matches but topped the group thanks to a superior head-to-head record.

Round of 16
The Premier League’s remaining representatives will be happy with the round of 16 draw. Arsenal and Manchester City avoided the likes of PSG, Inter Milan and Napoli to draw Porto and FC Copenhagen respectively. Having topped their groups, Arsenal and Manchester City will both play at home in the second leg which historically offers an advantage over the sides playing at home in the first leg.
Inter Milan versus Atletico Madrid is arguably the most difficult tie to call whilst out of the eight unseeded teams, Paris Saint-Germain look the most likely to progress against Real Sociedad. From a neutral’s perspective, Napoli versus Barcelona looks to be the most exciting tie.
