AFCON Knockout Stage: Betting Tips and Odds

The group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations came to a thrilling conclusion this week and we now know the 16 nations that’ll contest the tournament’s first knockout stage. Here at betting.bet we’ll look forward to the round of 16 and beyond, bringing the latest AFCON betting odds courtesy of William Hill.

Early Departures

The group stage produced numerous shock results and caused many of the competition’s heavyweights to depart early. The likes of Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia were all tipped to go deep into the competition but failed to progress beyond the group stage. In the aftermath of Ghana’s elimination, former Premier League boss, Chris Hughton was sacked as head coach of the Black Stars.

Market Leaders

Morocco are the bookies’ favourite to win a second AFCON title. The world’s 13th highest-ranked nation has lost just once in twelve matches. Their solitary defeat since the 2022 FIFA World Cup came away at South Africa last June and coincidentally it is South Africa that Morocco will meet in the round of 16. In the group stage, Morocco topped Group F with seven points from a possible nine with wins over Tanzania (3-0) and Zambia (1-0) either side of a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Opponents, South Africa finished second in Group E with four points from three matches.

Senegal were the only nation to come through the group stage with a 100% record having recorded wins over Gambia (3-0), Cameroon (3-1) and Guinea (2-0). Senegal have not lost a competitive international since losing to 3-0 to England in the FIFA World Cup round of 16. In the round of 16, Senegal take on two-time winners, Ivory Coast.

Hosts, Ivory Coast scraped through to the knockout stage despite a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Equatorial Guinea. Former Middlesbrough and Birmingham City full-back Emilio Nsue scored twice for Equatorial Guinea against Ivory Coast and the 34-year-old is a shock leader in the Golden Boot race with five group stage goals. Nsue wasn’t even listed in the pre-tournament Golden Boot betting but is now the 4/11 favourite to claim the award.

Nigeria versus Cameroon is arguably the pick of the round of 16 matches despite both nations struggling throughout the group stage. Nigeria scored just three goals in three group games but Victor Osimhen and co are more than capable of putting a Cameroon side yet to keep a clean sheet in the tournament to the sword on Saturday.
