UEFA Champions League: Last-16 Preview & Odds

The UEFA Champions League returns this week with the first four last-16 fixtures taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday

The UEFA Champions League returns this week with the first four last-16 fixtures taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday. Holders Manchester City are amongst the favourites to win the Champions League again this year and ahead of the resumption of Europe’s elite club competition we’ll bring the latest outright odds from our partners at Unibet.

The English contingent

There are two English sides left in the tournament following group stage exits for both Manchester United and Newcastle United. Manchester City take on Danish champions, FC Copenhagen whilst Arsenal go up against two-time European champions, FC Porto.

Manchester City claimed a maiden Champions League title last season and Pep Guardiola’s side are the bookies’ outright favourites to lift the trophy again this season. The holders were one of only two sides to achieve a 100% record in the group stage and with 18 goals they were the highest goal scorers across the six-game group stage.

Arsenal topped Group B thanks to their excellent home form so far in this season’s Champions League. 9 of the Gunners’ 13 group stage points came at the Emirates Stadium, as they won all three home matches without conceding a goal.

Leading contenders

The latest outright odds from Unibet indicate that Manchester City and Arsenal are amongst a quartet of clubs in with a real chance of lifting this season’s Champions League trophy alongside European heavyweights, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The standout players at both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are current England internationals with both Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane thriving at their respective new clubs this season. Bellingham’s Real Madrid won six games out of six in Group C whilst Bayern Munich went unbeaten in Group A with 16 points out of a possible 18.

Real Madrid take on RB Leipzig in the last-16 whilst Bayern Munich have been drawn against Italian side, Lazio. Bellingham and Kane scored five goals apiece in the group stage and inevitably feature prominently in the UEFA Champions League Golden Boot betting market.

Dark-horses

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are next in the outright betting at 12/1 and 14/1 respectively however the real dark horse could be three-time winners, Inter Milan. The Italian giants are closing in on a 20th domestic title and given their form in Serie A, Inter Milan have to be taken seriously. Inter Milan remain unbeaten in all competitions since September and are yet to taste defeat in this season’s Champions League. However, they did manage just three wins and three draws from their six Group D matches.

Inter Milan were losing Champions League finalists last season but have arguably a stronger squad following the acquisitions of the likes of Marcus Thuram, Yann Sommer, Benjamin Pavard and Davide Frattesi. Inter Milan will play Atletico Madrid in arguably the toughest last-16 match to call. The first leg will be played at the San Siro on the 20th February.
