The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is continuing to gather pace and FIFA President, Gianni Infantino was recently in Canada as part of FIFA’s schedule announcement program. Whilst in Toronto, Infantino met up with hip-hop star, Drake and the rapper came in for real praise from the FIFA President who labelled the Canadian a “real soccer fan”.

Canada will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the USA and Mexico with Toronto and Vancouver selected amongst the tournament’s host cities. On the World Cup heading to Canada, Drake commented, “Not to make this a Canadian promo but we are the nicest people you'll ever meet. Canada as a whole, we have an incredible melting pot. But in Toronto, there are just so many different cultural experiences. So when the world comes it's going to be beautiful.

The five-time Grammy winner added, “There is passion in many things but the passion for the World Cup is unmatched. Of course we will welcome with open arms and just to have all these different people who are there with passion, with competitive spirit [but] for a great game and great cause, I think it's just going to fill the streets with so much energy. We'll be ready for you in Canada.

Drake’s hometown, Toronto is scheduled to stage six matches throughout the FIFA World Cup including five group stage matches as well as one of the round of 16 fixtures. The first match set to take place at Toronto’s BMO Field will be the opening fixture for co-hosts, Canada. The Canadians have qualified for two previous World Cups but failed to get out of the group stage in both 1986 and 2022.

Alphonso Davies is the jewel in the crown for the Canadian national team and the Ghanaian-born flyer will be in his prime at 26 when the World Cup heads to North America. Davies could prove to be one of the real stars of the tournament but it remains to be seen where he’ll be playing his club football at that point. Alphonso Davies remains a key player for German giants, Bayern Munich but rumours of a summer switch to Real Madrid have intensified in recent months.
