After their come-from-behind win in the Premier League at the weekend, Manchester City’s double-treble aspirations turn to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola’s side are overwhelming favourites to progress to the next round but there are still plenty of betting opportunities available. Here at betting.bet we’ll provide an in-depth preview of this Champions League fixture, including team news, match stats and the latest pre-match odds and free bet offers from our partners at William Hill.
First leg recap
Manchester City will take a commanding lead into Wednesday’s second leg having earned a 3-1 in Copenhagen thanks to goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. Magnus Mattsson had drawn FC Copenhagen level at 1-1 midway through the first half.
Form
Manchester City’s first leg win came in the midst of the 19-game unbeaten run they’re currently enjoying in all competitions. Manchester City warmed up for Wednesday’s match with a 3-1 win against fierce rivals, Manchester United in the Premier League and have not lost at the Etihad Stadium in any competition for over a year.
FC Copenhagen head to Manchester with a mountain to climb. The Danish side did not warm up for their Champions League tie in the best fashion, losing 2-0 to title rivals, Midtjylland and subsequently slipping to third in the Danish Superliga.
Betting tips
Manchester City are going to qualify for the quarter-final but will not find many backers at odds of 1/1000! Backing the reigning European champions to win the second leg is also unappealing at 1/8. However, there are some intriguing markets to consider.
First of all, it’s worth noting that at the weekend, Manchester City take on Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League. This means their big hitters are unlikely to see out the full 90 minutes on Wednesday. Backing the first half to be the highest scoring half is very generously priced at 9/5 whilst Man City to be leading after 15 minutes is appealing at 12/5.
Julian Alvarez played the final 30 minutes against Manchester United at the weekend, providing an assist for Phil Foden and Manchester City’s second goal of the afternoon. The Argentine could be in line to start against FC Copenhagen and with 15 goals in all competitions already this season, Alvarez could prove to be the best option in the goalscorer markets. Julian Alvarez is 10/11 to score at any time or 7/2 to score first.
