Lossiemouth Shines on Opening Day

Willie Mullins and Paul Townend Celebrate Third Victory with Stellar Performance in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle

Lossiemouth gracefully secured trainers Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend their third victory on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, charmingly outperforming her competitors in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle. Despite initial market hesitations as she took on a longer distance on challenging terrain, her performance was nothing short of tranquil, effortlessly distancing herself from Telmesomethinggirl in the final moments.

Mullins shared his enthusiasm: “She is a Champion Hurdle mare I think, we all think. Once again Paul was just so cool on her. She can improve, she can go on a year older and she’s got everything. We made the right decision to come here, end of story. She sailed through the Champion Hurdle with ease. At only five years old, sparing her a tough race in the Champion Hurdle was the wise choice.”

As the 8-13 favorite, Lossiemouth finished three lengths ahead of Telmesomethinggirl, with Hispanic Moon trailing by nine and a half lengths for third place. “She's brilliant,” Townend remarked. He praised the thoughtful and patient approach taken with her, highlighting how it has now beautifully paid off. Despite concerns about her stamina due to the weather, Townend was confident in her capabilities, finding her easy to manage in the race. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to ride such exceptional horses, acknowledging the privilege it is.

Lossiemouth’s win not only marks Mullins's tenth victory in this race, joining the ranks of esteemed winners like Quevega, Glens Melody, Vroum Vroum Mag, and Benie Des Dieux, but also celebrates the second win of the day for owners Rich and Susannah Ricci, following Gaelic Warrior’s triumph in the Arkle.
