Hewick: The Dark Horse of the Gold Cup?

Betfair has put Hewick's odds at 12/1 for the upcoming Gold Cup on Friday afternoon

The Gold Cup stands as the pinnacle event of the Cheltenham Festival schedule. This year, we have a dark horse poised to cause an upset - Hewick!

The beginning of the Cheltenham Festival was marked by heavy rain, which consequently saw the Cross Country cancelled. This, paired with the drama at the Henderson yard, has seen this year's Cheltenham packed with drama. However, nothing can overshadow the excitement surrounding this year's Gold Cup, especially on its 100th anniversary!

Galopin Des Champs is widely favoured to clinch victory on Friday, amidst anticipation for a historic moment with Willie Mullins potentially securing his 100th win. However, Hewick is the underdog aiming to disrupt the status quo. Originating from modest roots. Hewick is a gelding as small as a pony, acquired for a mere £800 at two years old back in October 2017.

With over £600,000 in winnings to date, his journey represents a remarkable return on investment.

Betfair has put Hewick's odds at 12/1 for the upcoming Gold Cup on Friday afternoon, a testament to the event's esteemed status within horse racing. The Gold Cup, as Cheltenham's premier event, boasts a prize fund that significantly rewards jockeys and trainers. The 2024 Gold Cup features a staggering prize pool of £625,000, distributed among the top five finishers, with the champion earning £351,688.

While Galopin Des Champs secured last year's Gold Cup, Hewick could introduce an unexpected twist - with a precedent already set.

In a dramatic turn at last December's King George VI Chase in Kemptown, Hewick made a remarkable comeback, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to secure victory. Trailing by at least six horses, he capitalised on a moment of chaos at the fence to surge ahead, leaving competitors like Bravemansgame and Allaho in disbelief.

Shark Hanlon, Hewick's spirited trainer, celebrated the victory, drawing attention to his 'golden goose' bought for £800.

"Have a good look at him," he remarked joyfully then.

"Despite the odds, I knew we'd be among the top three. It was an incredible performance.

"Even when it seemed all was lost, his indomitable spirit shone through. Despite his size, standing at 16 hands amidst larger horses, he questioned his presence yet demonstrated both speed and endurance, having triumphed over three miles and five.

"Looking ahead, the Grand National may be his calling, but when opportunity knocks, the Gold Cup is the challenge to embrace.

"I planned for one preparatory run before the Gold Cup, and here we are," he added.
