When it was announced that Jake Paul will fight Mike Tyson, the news received a mixed response. Regardless of your stance on this Celeb/Youtuber boxing space, the prospect of seeing the two in the ring is intriguing.
While not everyone supports the upcoming bout, Current heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is certainly excited to see how the fight pans out.
Jake Paul, with a record of 9-1 after facing YouTubers, UFC stars, and professional boxers including Fury's own brother Tommy, is now set to fight the legendary Mike Tyson (50-6). The fight, drawing global interest and raising concerns for the 58-year-old Tyson against the younger, quicker Paul, is scheduled for July 20 in Dallas, TX.
WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury views the match as a chance to expand the sport's popularity.
"I think it's fantastic for boxing," Fury told:
"You've got a legend in Mike Tyson. You've got a YouTube boxer [Jake Paul]. He has come into the game and blew it up and he's got millions of followers and millions of views and millions of eyes. Good, bad or indifferent. Some people love him, some people hate him. So, I think it's a really good spectacle for boxing. Brings a lot of people to the game."
"Listen, who am I to say, 'Oh, Mike Tyson shouldn't be boxing or Jake Paul shouldn't be boxing, good luck to 'em. They're both gonna make what I call a s*** ton of money out of it. So, isn't that what it's about?
"[They're fighting at] a great stadium," Fury referenced AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
"It'd be fantastic for the guys both getting paid, both gonna put on a show. I just don't know what's not to like. Oh, okay, [Tyson's] 57 years old, but he's a former undisputed world heavyweight king, and [Paul] plays computers for a living and he's come to boxing about a year ago. So, pretty even match."
The specifics of the Paul vs. Tyson fight, such as whether it will be a professional bout or an exhibition, are still undecided and will be determined by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Tyson's most recent professional fight was a defeat to Kevin McBride in 2005, but he returned for an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.
In a twist of fate, on the same night as Tyson's exhibition, Paul scored a memorable knockout against NBA's Nate Robinson. Now, four years later, Paul and Tyson are set to face off in the ring.
