Road to Cardiff

Wales reached the play-off final after earning a deserved 4-1 win over Finland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday evening. Goals from David Brooks, Neco Williams, Brennan Johnson and Dan James sealed the win for Wales.

Robert Page’s side initially clinched a play-off spot thanks to their recent UEFA Nations League performances. In the qualification group stage, Wales finished third in Group D behind Turkey and Croatia.

Poland’s play-off semi-final win was equally as impressive as they eased past Estonia 5-1 in Warsaw. Poland had initially finished third in European Championship qualifying Group E behind Albania and Czech Republic but like Wales, it was their Nations League ranking that sealed a play-off spot.

Poland won on their last visit to the Welsh capital so cannot be underestimated on Tuesday evening. Wales and Poland were grouped together for the UEFA Nations League two summers ago and Poland won both home and away, consigning Wales to relegation from League A.

Team news

Wales have no new injury problems ahead of Tuesday’s crucial fixture but manager, Robert Page is facing a couple of real selection dilemmas. As the only out and out centre forward in the Welsh squad, Keiffer Moore was a shock omission from their starting XI against Finland. Will Moore return to the starting lineup on Tuesday or will the in-form Ipswich Town forward have to settle for a place on the bench again against Poland?

Captain, Aaron Ramsey was an unused substitute in the win over Finland and he is also set to start on the bench on Tuesday. However, Dan James is pushing to start after impressing on the bench against Finland. James marked his 50th international appearance with a goal and could earn cap number 51 from the start against Poland.

Betting tips

Wales and Poland have met on ten previous occasions and Wales have not won since their very first meeting back in 1973. Seven wins and two draws in nine matches against Wales since then should give Poland plenty of confidence heading to Cardiff. However, we’re siding with Wales and tipping the famous Red Wall to cheer them all the way to Germany. Wales to win in 90 minutes is great value at 6/4.

Wales’ free-flowing, dynamic forward line almost guarantee goals on Tuesday evening and despite the magnitude of what is at stake for both nations, we’re expecting to see a fair few goals at the Cardiff City Stadium. Over 2.5 match goals and both teams to score are both excellent options at 7/5 and 21/20 respectively.

The movement of Finland captain, Teemu Pukki caused the Welsh backline no end of problems on Thursday evening. Pukki scored one and could’ve netted a couple more. With all due respect to the former Norwich City forward, Poland’s, Robert Lewandowski is several levels above Pukki. We fear for the Wales’ defence up against prolific Polish captain, Lewandowski and the Barcelona forward looks a great option a 9/5 to score at any time.
