Gerri Colombe in Great Form for 2024 Grand National

Gerri Colombe in Great Form for 2024 Grand National

Will Gerri Colombe get the win for Gordon Elliot in the Aintree Bowl?

In 2023, Gordon Elliott celebrated a triumphant Grand National meeting, securing three Grade 1 victories, and plans are underway to return to Aintree next month with a strong contingent from Cullentra House, headlined by Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Gerri Colombe in the Bowl.

The team, which includes Gerri Colombe, Irish Point, and Sire Du Berlais, brought Elliott significant success at Aintree the previous year, and there's anticipation that the trio will return for another shot at glory on Merseyside.

Gerri Colombe, victor of the previous year's Mildmay Novices' Chase, has shown promising form in recent training sessions, suggesting a potential showdown with King George VI Chase victor Hewick in the three-mile-plus Aintree Bowl on the meeting's first day.

Elliott shared his optimism, stating:

"Gerri Colombe is in top form post-Gold Cup, and I'm very pleased with his recent training. We'll finalise our plans soon, but Aintree is a strong possibility. He performed well there last year, and given his condition post-Cheltenham, we're considering it."

Irish Point, who narrowly missed victory in the Champion Hurdle, might find the Aintree Hurdle a suitable challenge, especially considering his previous success over two and a half miles in last year's Mersey Novices' Hurdle, suggesting it may be his ideal distance.

Elliott said: "You'd have to be delighted with the way Irish Point ran in the Champion Hurdle. He didn't do much wrong and was just beaten by a very, very good horse in State Man. We know he stays two and a half miles well and that looks his ideal trip. He seems in good form and there is every chance he'll go to Aintree."
