2 minutes 1934 - Golden Miller achieves a Cheltenham Gold Cup / Grand National double
We continue our countdown of the greatest Grand National moments today as we move to within nine days of one of the highlights of the horse racing calendar. Number nine of our countdown was contested 90 years ago but the achievements of that 1934 Grand National stands the test of time.
9 - Golden Miller Creates History

Golden Miller is one of the most famous National Hunt horses of the 20th century but his most famous achievements came at Cheltenham’s Prestbury Park. Trained by Basil Briscoe, Golden Miller won an unprecedented five straight Cheltenham Gold Cups between 1932 and 1936.
In 1933 Golden Miller was tipped to become the first horse to win both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same year. Having won a second straight Gold Cup he headed to Aintree at the bookies’ 9/1 favourite to win the Grand National but he unfortunately fell at the 24th fence.
Twelve months on and just a few weeks after clinching a Gold Cup hat-trick, Golden Miller returned to Aintree as the 8/1 second favourite for the Grand National. This time the seven-year-old was not to be beaten as he charged to Grand National glory in a new record time. Carrying 12st 2lbs, Golden Miller won the Grand National in a time of 9:20.4, taking nearly ten seconds off a record that had stood since 1862.
No horse has since won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same year although L’Escargot did follow up Gold Cup wins in 1970 and 1971 by winning the 1975 Grand National. Making the achievement even more remarkable is the fact that no horse has since won off a higher weight than Golden Miller’s mark.
