Top Ten Greatest Grand National Moments: Number Six

1928 - Tipperary Tim wins at 100/1

We now have less than a week to go until the 2024 Grand National and for number six in our countdown of the greatest ever Grand National moments we go all the way back to 1928.

6 - Tipperary Tim wins at 100/1

Year: 1928

Winner: Tipperary Time

Odds: 100/1

As far as drama goes, you’d do well to find any race that offered quite as much excitement as the 1928 Grand National. Adverse weather conditions meant the race was run on very heavy ground and only two of the 41 horses entered into that year’s Grand National would actually finish the race.

Amateur jockey, William Dutton saddled 100/1 shot, Tipperary Tim and legend has it that a friend of his had called out beforehand that he’d only win if all the other runners fell and that’s exactly what happened. Subsequent two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Easter Hero fell at the seventh fence (Canal Turn), causing a pile-up from which only seven horses remained in the race.

The testing conditions saw several more runners fall throughout the race meaning that by the 29th of the 30 fences only three horses remained. A slipped saddle meant we lost leader, Great Span at the penultimate fence, before new leader, Billy Barton fell at the final fence. Although Billy Barton’s jockey would remount, the only other runner remaining, Tipperary Tim claimed an unlikely victory to etch his name into Grand National folklore.
