2023 Recap

In 2023 Jon Rahm became the fourth Spanish player to win the Masters after Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia. Rahm carded a final round 69 to finish four shots ahead of Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson on -12. Mickelson’s -8 score which included a final round 65 saw him become the oldest player to ever finish in the top five of a Masters tournament.

Market Leaders At Augusta

2022 champion, Scottie Scheffler is the red-hot favourite to win at Augusta this week and heads to the Masters in great shape. The world number one became the first back-to-back winner of the Players’ Championship last month and has achieved a top-ten finish in eight of the last eleven majors.

Rory McIlroy will again be prominent this week but as a fifth major continues to elude him, McIlroy always seems to find at least one too good. McIlroy has been placed in the top ten in five consecutive Masters tournaments but the competition remains the only major he’s failed to win.

Defending champion, Jon Rahm is expected to go close once again this year. Rahm was placed in three of the four majors in 2023 and recently finished tied-fourth in a 54-hole LIV golf event in Miami.

Rounding up the big four in the betting is Xander Schauffele. The 30-year-old is still chasing a first major win despite four top three finishes. Schauffele finished tied-second in the Masters back in 2019 before tying for third in 2021. Schauffele heads to Augusta in decent form having earned a top-five finish in three of the last four tournaments he’s been involved in on the PGA Tour.

Each-Way Chances

Any LIV golfer carries an element of risk given that they have now become accustomed to playing the shorter 54-hole game but despite failing to achieve a top-twenty finish in any of his previous three LIV Golf tournaments, former winner, Dustin Johnson has to be respected back at Augusta. Johnson is not playing anywhere near the level he did when winning the Masters with a tournament record score of 268 in 2020 but he is certainly worth each-way consideration.

Rising star, Akshay Bhatia became the first player to qualify for the Masters via the Valero Texas Open having carded an impressive -20 score before winning a play-off against Denny McCarthy last weekend. A recent shoulder injury remains a concern but Bhatia is the standout pick at the lower end of the betting market.
