1967 - Foinavon Wins After Dramatic Pile Up
Our countdown of the greatest ever Grand National moments reaches the penultimate day and number two on our list takes us back to 1967. Younger followers of horse racing will be familiar with the iconic Grand National fence, Foinavon but may not be aware that the 7th and 23rd fence was named after the 1967 Grand National winning horse, Foinavon.
2 - Foinavon Wins After Dramatic Pile Up
Year: 1967
Winner: Foinavon
Odds: 100/1
Back in 1967, Foinavon entered the Grand National as an unfancied 100/1 shot and was trailing near the rear of the field after 22 of the raceโs 30 fences had been jumped. However, the 23rd fence was about to offer one of the most dramatic moments in National Hunt history.
Popham Down, a loose horse that had fallen at the first fence, veered sharply to the right as he jumped the obstacle alongside race leader, Rutherfords. What ensued was a pile-up of dramatic proportions with all bar one of the remaining challengers either unseating their jockeys or refusing the fence. Foinavon avoided the melee to jump into an unlikely lead.
Whilst several jockeys cleared the 23rd fence at the second attempt, none were able to catch Foinavon who went on to win the 1967 Grand National by fifteen lengths. An SP of 100/1 made Foinavon the biggest priced winner of the Grand National since Caughoo in 1947.
