Should he succeed, he would become only the second Irish trainer to win the jumps championship, joining Vincent O'Brien, who last clinched it 70 years ago.
Willie Mullins is setting his sights on the British trainers' title following his triumph in the Grand National with I Am Maximus.
Should he succeed, he would become only the second Irish trainer to win the jumps championship, joining Vincent O'Brien, who last clinched it 70 years ago.
Today's horse racing betting community will not be shocked by yesterday's result, given how I Am Maximus was installed as the favourite to be the winner of the 2024 Grand National.
With the Grand National's £500,000 prize, Mullins now leads his British counterparts Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls with just two weeks remaining in the season.
"I would love to win the British championship, it would be something different," Mullins stated.
He also announced plans to target next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup with I Am Maximus, the 2023 Irish National winner, following a commanding victory by seven-and-a-half lengths over Delta Work. Rachael Blackmore finished third on Minella Indo, leading an all-Irish top four with Galvin in fourth place.
Kitty's Light came in fifth under Welsh trainer Christian Williams, whose daughter Betsy is currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia.
"I thought we had a chance. A long way out he was travelling sweet and jumping well. I was trying to be calm, but I was getting quite excited. He's a wonderful horse - he's great. We're very lucky to have him," Williams expressed.
Amateur jockey David Maxwell, a real estate entrepreneur, finished sixth on Ain't That A Shame, a horse he purchased specifically to participate in the race. For Mullins, another milestone is on the horizon.
In March, he captured both the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup, becoming the first trainer to notch up 100 wins at the Cheltenham Festival.
April marked his second National victory, his first being with Hedgehunter in 2005, solidifying his position as the favourite to emulate the legendary O'Brien in clinching the British championship.
