Jeremy Clarkson Becomes Racehorse Owner, Leading New Syndicate

The television personality, known for his Amazon series "Clarkson's Farm" where he transitioned from automotive journalism to farming, will lead a syndicate based in the Cotswolds, sponsored by Old Gold Racing.

Jeremy Clarkson, formerly of "Top Gear," is embarking on his initial venture into racehorse ownership with a horse aptly named after his beer brand.

Clarkson is the latest celebrity to enter the world of racehorse ownership, joining the likes of Harry Redknapp and Sir Alex Ferguson, who enjoyed great success at this year's Cheltenham Festival.

The television personality, known for his Amazon series "Clarkson's Farm" where he transitioned from automotive journalism to farming, will lead a syndicate based in the Cotswolds, sponsored by Old Gold Racing.

Named "The Hawkstonian," this eye-catching grey four-year-old will be trained by Ben Pauling. The horse, whose name is inspired by Clarkson’s Hawkstone beer, is expected to debut either in late April or early October. It was acquired for €45,000 at the 2023 Goffs Arkle sale.

"I mentioned to the Hawkstone team that we should explore racing, but it seems there was a mix-up between motor racing and horse racing!" joked Clarkson.

He added, "Luckily, Ben Pauling's facilities are just a stone’s throw from both Diddly Squat Farm and the Hawkstone Brewery. It's comforting to know where my hay is headed. Plus, the Paulings once farmed our land and were instrumental in teaching Kaleb [Cooper, from Clarkson's Farm] everything he knows about agriculture."

Clarkson isn't the only one from the former "Top Gear" crew to delve into horse racing. Richard Hammond also co-owns the Kim Bailey-trained Subway Surf, alongside presenter Carol Vorderman.

"The Hawkstonian" will initially be available for purchase by Hawkstone’s club members on April 22, followed by openings on Old Gold Racing's waiting list the next day. The general public will have a chance to buy shares on April 25.

Ed Seyfried, CEO of Old Gold Racing, expressed his enthusiasm:

“We're privileged to launch the Hawkstone Racing syndicate with Jeremy’s involvement. He has revolutionised perceptions of farming with his popular TV show, and we eagerly anticipate his participation in the racing community this season."

Seyfried humorously noted:

“Most petrolheads begin by tinkering with lawnmowers; well, this lawnmower runs at 35mph across three miles, leaping over hedges."
