Tyson Fury has been advised that the cut above his right eye is likely to reopen during his upcoming fight against Oleksandr Usyk in their highly anticipated heavyweight undisputed title match on May 18.

Initially, Fury had to withdraw from the February date after receiving a severe cut above his right eyebrow during a sparring session. While it was expected that the bout would be postponed until late 2024, the announcement of a rescheduled date in May came as a surprise. Boxing fans are now looking forward to a great night of fighting, with the Fury v Usyk undercard equally as impressive!

Fury underwent surgery, receiving 11 stitches to close the cut, which remains clearly visible as the fight date approaches.

Sammy Morris, a seasoned cutwoman, pointed out that the cut is located in the same area where Fury sustained two injuries during his 2019 bout with Otto Wallin.

Morris expressed concern that the risk of the cut reopening could be a recurring issue for Fury in any future fights leading up to his retirement.

"If he did that five years ago and the wound has come open again five years later in exactly the same place then it hasn't healed properly and now it's double wound site," Morris told.

"He's been cut and cut again in the same place. It just goes to show that after five years it hasn't knitted back together.

"Even by coming back in after 100 days, which is the basic recommendation of when you should fight again after a cut is meant to have healed, he runs the risk of it reopening against Usyk."

She added: "With age, your skin loses elasticity and the collagen underneath it, so it becomes much easier for you to get cut.

"Fury is 35 years old now and it is going to take him almost double the time to heal as someone that is 20 years old.

"So it will cause him problems and I personally think it will come open in his next fight. And as a fighter, he will be very aware of that. Hopefully, he doesn't panic too much about it and he protects his eye because the first thing Usyk is going to want to do is come out and land a shot on that eye.

"Fury usually carries his hands low and showboats. I don't think we'll see any of that.

"I think he'll have a very tight guard because he needs to protect that eye at all times."

But, how are the online boxing betting odds looking? Well, Bet355 has BOTH fighters at 10/11, suggesting that the result is anyone's guess!
