Willie Mullins is threatening to dominate this Saturday’s Coral Scottish Grand National as he aims to become the first Irish trainer in 70 years to win the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship. Mullins heads to Ayr Racecourse with the first three in the latest betting markets. Here at betting.bet we’ll assess the chances of some of the market leaders whilst also scanning the lower ends of the betting markets for some real each-way value. Odds for Saturday’s Scottish Grand National come from race sponsors and popular horse racing betting site, Coral.
Joint-Favourites
Willie Mullins has already won the Aintree Grand National with I Am Maximus and the Closutton pair of Macdermott and Mr Incredible head the Scottish Grand National market at present with both looking very capable of winning. Macdermott races outside of Ireland for the first time less than three weeks on from an impressive win in a handicap at Fairyhouse. Now 16 lbs higher but certainly looks capable of improving. Mr Incredible unseated his rider in the Grand National at Aintree but had looked fairly comfortable up until that point. Good second in the Midlands National and a leading player at Ayr.
Best Of British
Britain’s best chance could come in the shape of Git Maker. The Jamie Snowden-trained eight-year-old has three wins in seven runs over fences and was second in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham behind Inothewayurthinkin. The run looks all the better for the race’s winner’s subsequent Grade 1 victory at Aintree. Whacker Clan was third at Cheltenham but has 18 lengths to make up on Git Maker.
Anglers Crag was last seen when winning a fourth straight race in the Betting.Bet Eider Chase at Newcastle in February. Brian Elliison’s eight-year-old has enjoyed a fine few months but a slight drop in trip since his last win is probably not enough to counter an 8 lbs rise.
Three of the last five Scottish Grand National winners have been trained in Wales, including last year’s winner, Kitty’s Light. Secret Reprieve looks an unlikely winner for Welsh trainer, Evan Williams but should not be entirely written off at a huge price. Secret Reprieve was off for 12 months before finishing sixth at Sandown last month. Ten years old now but sliding down the weights and may be overpriced at 50/1.
