The odds on Jadon Sancho being named in England’s Euro 2024 squad tumbled overnight after the on-loan Manchester United winger played a starring role in Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg win over Paris Saint-Germain. Bookmakers, Betfair have slashed Sancho’s odds of a call up from 20/1 to just 11/2 in less than 24 hours.
Sancho was named man of the match on Wednesday evening as Borussia Dortmund took a major step towards securing a place in the UEFA Champions League final. Starting on the right hand side in Dortmund’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Sancho ran PSG left-back, Nuno Mendes ragged, playing a full 90 minutes. Incredibly, Sancho completed 12 dribbles in Wednesday’s match and completed more take-ons (11) in a Champions League semi-final since Lionel Messi’s 16 against Manchester United back in 2008.
Sancho was a mainstay of Gareth Southgate’s England side during his last spell at Borussia Dortmund and a return to Germany has undoubtedly improved his chances of a place in England’s Three Lions squad. With UEFA confirming an increase in squad sizes from 23 to 26 this summer, Sancho could be set for an unlikely return to the England setup.
Before this summer’s European Championships, Sancho will be eyeing glory in the UEFA Champions League. The Germans are now just 21/20 to make the final at Wembley Stadium whilst they are 7/1 to be crowned champions of Europe for a second time. According to Betfair’s latest Champions League odds, a Real Madrid v Paris Saint-Germain final looks the most likely.
Jadon Sancho is not the only out of favour England international to rediscover his best form on loan in Germany. Eric Dier has emerged as a key player for Bayern Munich and the on-loan Spurs defender has been shortened into 7/2 to book a spot in England’s final 26-man squad.
