The 1000 Guineas is the feature race at Newmarket on Sunday and this year’s renewal will be contested by a wide-open field of 16 horses. As we look ahead to the one of the most prestigious fillies races on the British flat racing calendar, we’ll provide race insights and tips as well as the latest horse racing betting odds and free bet offers courtesy of our betting partners at Betfair.

1000 Guineas History

The 1000 Guineas was established in 1814 and has become one of the most prestigious races of the flat racing calendar. The second of Britain’s five Classics comes 24 hours after the 2000 Guineas. Like the 2000 Guineas, the 1000 Guineas is raced over one straight mile on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course and is open to three-year-old horses. The 1000 Guineas is open to fillies only and is the first leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, followed later in the year by the Oaks and the St Leger.

Aidan O’Brien has trained five of the last eight 1000 Guineas winners with both Minding (2016) and Love (2020) going on to win the Oaks at Epsom later the same year. Last year’s renewal was won by Mawj for trainer, Saeed bin Surror and jockey, Oisin Murphy.

The Market Leader

Fallen Angel has attracted plenty of market support recently and is likely to go off as favourite for Sunday’s 1000 Guineas. Fallen Angel enjoyed a superb juvenile year, culminating in Group 1 success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Fallen Angel is yet to run this year but did impress on a gallop at Newmarket earlier in 2024. Neither trainer, Karl Burke or jockey, Danny Tudhope have won a Classic before.

Main Dangers

Whilst Fallen Angel sits at the head of the market, this renewal is wide-open. Dance Sequence and Ylang Ylang are next in the betting and both currently priced at 4/1. Ylang Ylang is one of only two C&D winners in the race having landed the Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile here in October. Whilst that represents excellent form she has proved very beatable in previous runs including when 9/9 behind Fallen Angel at the Curragh last September and again later that month when finishing 3/6 in the Rockfel Stakes over 7f at Newmarket.

Dance Sequence did win a Group 3 over 7f at Newmarket in October but was a beaten favourite back at the course in the Nell Gwyn Stakes two weeks ago. The Group 3 Nell Gwyn often serves as an excellent 1000 Guineas trial and this year’s renewal was won by Pretty Crystal for trainer, Richard Fahey.

Ramatuelle heads to Newmarket on the back of one of the busier juvenile seasons in the race. Trained by Christopher Head, Ramatuelle was seen five times as a two-year-old in France and made his seasonal reappearance when a beaten favourite in the Group 3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville. Raced on heavy ground and looks better suited to quicker ground.

Last year’s winning jockey, Oisin Murphy will ride See The Fire for the 2000 Guineas winning trainer of 12 months ago, Andrew Balding. See The Fire was defeated over C&D by Ylang Ylang back in October but connections are more than capable of getting her right for Sunday’s rematch.

An Outside Chance

Nell Gwyn winner, Pretty Crystal has to be taken seriously at odds of 14/1 whilst we are long-time admirers of Porta Fortuna. Far from disgraced when half a length back in second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf in November and prior to that she had won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f on the Rowley Mile. Has five lengths to make up on Fallen Angel on their Moyglare Stud Stakes form but she was held up in mid-division at the Curragh before being outpaced over a stiff 7f. Will appreciate the extra furlong and a bit of give under foot, has the beating of Ylang Ylang and could pull off a shock against Fallen Angel.
