Duke of York Stakes Overview
The Duke of York Stakes is a Group 2 race contested over a straight six furlongs. The race is open to horses aged three years and over. Fillies and mares receive a 3lbs weight allowance whilst there are penalties given to previous Group 1 (5lbs) and Group 2 (3lbs) winners.
Azure Blue Eyeing Back-to-Back Wins
Handsome Sailor remains the only two-time winner of this race having won in both 1987 and 1988. Last year’s winner, Azure Blue is hoping to match that achievement this year as she once again lines up for trainer, Michael Dods. Azure Blue has only had one run since and could only finish 6/8 in the July Cup. Remains a big player but has to put that Newmarket disappointment behind her. A 3lbs mares allowance could swing this in her favour.
Azure Blue is not the only four-year-old mare in with an excellent chance of winning on Wednesday. Swingalong heads back to York 2/2 over C&D and produced two solid Group 1 wins over the autumn.
Market Leaders
Mill Stream and Spycatcher were second and third respectively in last month’s Abernant Stakes at Newmarket and they have received plenty of market support this week. Mill Stream is one of the leading four-year-olds in the race and certainly has potential to improve. Spycatcher finished second in this race two years ago and is another that imporessed in Group 1 company last autumn.
Dark Horse
Washginton Heights could be seriously underestimated in this field. Won the Abernant Stakes ahead of a few of the leading players. Continues to drift in the market but should he back up that Newmarket form he’d be right in the mix.
