The Dante Stakes is the feature race on day two of York’s three day meeting and there are seven runners declared for this year’s renewal. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview this highly-anticipated race, providing tips and insights as well as the latest odds from our partners at NAGS Bet.
Dante Stakes Overview
The Dante Stakes is a Group 2 race contested by three year olds over 1m2f. Established in 1958, the Dante serves as a key Derby trial with five horses this century alone completing a Dante/Derby double including North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) and most recently Desert Crown in (2022).
A Red-Hot Favourite
Ancient Wisdom is a well-backed favourite for this year’s renewal. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by three-time Dante winner, William Buick, Ancient Wisdom could give Godolphin their second win in the race in four years.
Ancient Wisdom won 4 of 5 races as a two-year-old including wins over one mile in the Autumn Stakes and the Group 1 Futurity Trophy. His only defeat came in a Listed race at Ascot where he finished third behind subsequent 2000 Guineas runner up, Rosallion and Al Musmak.
Likely Challengers
Al Musmak finished almost a length clear of Ancient Wisdom when the two met at Ascot last July and he looks like he may be better suited to Thursday’s 1m2f distance. Two runs since have produced a win in a Listed race and a second place finish in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.
Caviar Heights is the only entry with a previous win at Thursday’s distance having landed the Newmarket Stakes earlier this month. He did however finish last of nine in the Royal Lodge and needs to make a considerable step forward on that run to be anywhere near winning this.
