Another thrilling Premier League of Darts tournament is nearing an end with just one more week of action before the top four players head to the O2 Arena for the play-offs. Night sixteen will be staged at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena and for the final time we’ll preview each of the evening’s four quarter-final matches, offering match insights and predictions as well as the latest odds and free bet offers from tournament sponsors, BetMGM.
Luke Littler v Peter Wright
The final week’s quarter-final matches are based on league rankings which makes predicting two or three of these fixtures look fairly straightforward; none more so than the night’s opener between Luke Littler and Peter Wright. This year’s Premier League could not have gone any differently for Littler and Wright. In his debut season, Luke Littler will head to next week’s play-offs as the highest-ranked player after an excellent campaign that has seen him claim four overall night wins and lose just three of his quarter-final matches. In contrast, Peter Wright’s rather forgettable tournament has produced just two quarter-final wins and seen him go no further than the semi-final. The two-time world champion has just four points on the board and his place at the bottom of the Premier League table was confirmed several weeks ago.
Prediction: Luke Littler
Nathan Aspinall v Michael Smith
The toughest quarter-final to call is the one with the most riding on it as Nathan Aspinal and Michael Smith meet in a winner-takes-all encounter. Aspinall sits in fourth place but holds just a single point advantage over Smith meaning whoever wins this quarter-final tie will book their place in next week’s play-offs.
Nathan Aspinal found himself in a similar position twelve months ago, failing to reach the play-offs despite occupying a top four position for the majority of the league stage. As he looks to exorcise the demons of 2023, Aspinall will have to bounce back from 6-3 loss he suffered at the hands of Michael Smith last week. Aspinall does still retain a 2-1 lead in head-to-head matches in this year’s Premier League.
Prediction: Nathan Aspinall
Luke Humphries v Gerwyn Price
Luke Humphries clinched his fourth overall night win in Leeds last week and the world number one will want to continue his excellent form in Sheffield. Humphries stormed to successive 6-1 wins over Rob Cross and Michael Smith before defeating Michael van Gerwen in a high-quality final.
Humphries and Price have met twice in this year’s Premier League with Luke Humphries emerging victorious on both occasions. A third straight win should be on the cards in Sheffield.
Prediction: Luke Humphries
Michael van Gerwen v Rob Cross
Rob Cross started and ended his Premier League campaign well but a run of six straight quarter-final losses between nights seven and twelve left him well short in his bid for a play-off spot. Cross and MVG have met four times in the Premier League already and whilst van Gerwen won the first meeting back on night three, Cross has bounced back to win three in a row. Rob Cross defeated Michael van Gerwen in back-to-back weeks on nights thirteen and fourteen, going on to reach the final on both occasions. Having finished runner up three times, Rob Cross will be desperate to sign off on an unsuccessful tournament by finally clinching his first overall night win.
Prediction: Rob Cross
