First Fight Recap & Postponed Rematch

Josh Taylor went into the first fight against mandatory challenger, Jack Catterall as Britain’s first and only undisputed world champion in the four-belt era. Taylor boasted a professional record of 18-0 and simultaneously held the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring light-welterweight titles. Whilst Jack Catterall boasted a 26-0 professional record, Taylor went into the bout as the bookies’ overwhelming favourite.

The fight turned out to be anything but straightforward for the champion from Scotland and as we went to the judges’ scorecards many expected a new undisputed champion to be crowned. However, Taylor earned a controversial split decision win (114-111, 113-112, 112-113) to retain his belts. A rematch was promptly called but a series of postponements means more than two years have now passed since their first fight.

Inactive Taylor

The rematch between Taylor and Catterall was initially scheduled for March 2023 but had to be postponed after champion, Taylor sustained a foot injury in training. Catterall would instead take on Darragh Foley in May before earning an impressive win over Jorge Linares the following October.

A new date of April 27th 2024 was set but this was to be subsequently pushed back one month due to Josh Taylor’s slower-than-hoped recovery from minor eye surgery.

Josh Taylor has fought just once since winning a contentious first fight against Jack Catterall, losing his WBO and Ring light-welterweight titles to Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden in June 2023.

Betting Tips

Josh Taylor’s age coupled with two years of relative inactivity could be the undoing of the former undisputed world champion. Taylor was for a long time the bookies’ favourite to win on Saturday night but this particular market has recently swung in Catterall's favour. This is not the same Josh Taylor that was once considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers on the planet. Jack Catterall looks good value for the win at 15/20.

Only one of Jack Catterall’s last seven wins have come inside the distance however, after the controversy of his first fight against Taylor, he will not want to leave the outcome of Saturday's main event down to the judges at ringside. Jack Catterall to win by stoppage against an ageing, rusty Josh Taylor looks superb value at 3/1.
