Euro 2024 Group Stage Preview: Group A

We’re now just ten days from the start of Euro 2024 and as excitement starts to build for this summer’s major international football tournament here at betting.bet we’ll run the rule over all 24 nations heading to Germany. Group by group we’ll provide fixtures, opinions and betting tips and as we tackle Group A you can find the latest betting odds courtesy of our betting partners at Ladbrokes.

Germany

Host nation Germany have endured a tough time at recent international tournaments, bombing out of successive World Cups at the group stage and failing to progress beyond the round of 16 in the last European Championships. However, Julian Nagelsmann has quietly assembled a squad capable of putting Germany back on the international football map. Champions League final rivals Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck will form arguably the best central defensive partnership at the tournament whilst in Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, Germany possess two of the hottest properties in world football.

Kai Havertz has been tipped to lead the line for the hosts but that responsibility could fall on the shoulders of Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Fullkrug. The 31-year-old has netted 11 goals in 15 internationals and looks an excellent each-way option in the Golden Boot market at 33/1.

Scotland

Scotland are set to play in a second straight European Championships and their fourth overall but have never progressed beyond the group stage. Under the guidance of Steve Clarke, Scotland impressed during qualifying to finish ahead of a Norway side that includes Premier League stars Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. The Tartan Army also claimed a famous 2-0 win over eventual group winners Spain thanks to a Scott McTominay double. The Manchester United midfielder has endured a tough season at his club but remains a key player for Scotland.

There will be slight concerns over Scotland’s form heading into Euro 2024. Steve Clarke’s side laboured to a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in Monday’s warm-up match, ending a run of seven matches without a win.

Hungary

Hungary came through qualification unbeaten, winning five and drawing three of their matches in Group G. Aside from a goalless draw away at Montenegro, Hungary scored at least two goals in each of their qualification matches.

Many of Hungary’s key players ply their trade in Germany including attacker Roland Sallai and vice-captain Attila Szalai. Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai will captain Hungary and remains the nation’s most important player. Szoboszlai spent two seasons in Germany with RB Leipzig and scored four goals in qualifying, the 23-year-old will shoulder the hopes of a nation in Germany and is 3/1 to be Hungary’s highest goalscorer at Euro 2024.

Switzerland

This summer could be the last dance for many of Switzerland’s greatest ever players. Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Ricardo Rodriguez have all earned over 100 caps for Switzerland but are now the wrong side of 30. Xhaka has enjoyed a hugely successful season in Germany as a crucial part of Bayer Leverkusen’s ‘Invincibles’. The former Arsenal midfielder will captain a hugely experienced Switzerland side

Burnley forward Zeki Amdouni scored six times in qualification and also netted five times in the Clarets’ disappointing Premier League season. The 23-year-old will lead the line for Switzerland and will be their most likely source of goals
