Euro 2024 Group Stage Preview: Group C

The start of Euro 2024 is now just around the corner and as we continue our preview of all six groups our focus now turns to Group C. On paper Group C looks to be one of the easier groups however it does feature the bookies’ outright favourites, England. Our Group C preview includes the latest match and outright odds from our betting partners at BetVictor.

Slovenia

Slovenia will participate in the European Championships for a second time having previously qualified for Euro 2000. Slovenia are one of the lowest-ranked nations at Euro 2024 and head into the tournament positioned 57th in the latest FIFA World Rankings. Slovenia look in decent shape having won three and drawn one of their four matches so far this year, most notably when earning a 2-0 win over Portugal in March.

The return to the international fold for Josip Ilicic was a major boost for Slovenia. The former Palermo, Fiorentina and Atalanta star had not played an international since 2021 due to ongoing struggles with depression but scored the winning goal in Tuesday’s win over Armenia. The 36-year-old brings some much-needed experience to the Slovenian squad.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is undoubtedly the star of this Slovenian side and the 21-year-old will want to put himself in the shop window this summer ahead of a possible switch to one of Europe’s heavyweights. Sesko netted five goals in qualification and also scored 14 times in the Bundesliga this season. An apparent target for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea amongst others, Benjamin Sesko could be one of the breakthrough stars at Euro 2024.

Denmark

Denmark just pipped Slovenia to top spot in their qualifying group but on paper look a far better outfit than their Group C rivals. Denmark will possess one of the most experienced squads at this summer’s European Championships as they retain the core of the squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Milan’s Simon Kjaer will captain Denmark whilst Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen will hope to feature more prominently for his country than he has for his club throughout the 2023/24 season. Eriksen’s clubmate, Rasmus Hojlund will play a key role for the Danes having finished as the top goalscorer in their qualification group. Hojlund scored seven goals in qualifying and will lead the line for Denmark. At 33/1, Hojlund could offer real value in the Golden Boot market.

Serbia

Serbia have qualified for their first European Championships since reaching the quarter-finals back in 2000. The Eagles finished second in their qualification group but did lose home and away to group winners Hungary. Serbia head to Germany enduring a poor run of form and may struggle to progress beyond the group stage.

Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat away at Austria was their fifth loss in their past nine internationals and their Euro 2024 prospects will certainly not be helped by two of their key players opting to move to Saudi Arabia last summer aged just 29. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic remain crucial members of the Serbian squad but that lack of a competitive edge in the Saudi Arabian Pro League cannot be ideal.

The form of Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic is a major plus for Serbia with the 24-year-old netting 16 times in Serie A this season. Vlahovic has an impressive record of 13 goals in 26 internationals

England

The Three Lions have assembled one of their most exciting ever squads and are currently the bookies’ favourites to win Euro 2024. Gareth Southgate can call upon the Player of the Season from England, Spain and Germany with Foden, Bellingham and Kane all set to play a starring role in Germany this summer.

In his debut season at Bayern Munich, Harry Kane has enjoyed the most prolific goal scoring season of his career, netting 44 goals in 45 matches for the German giants. England’s captain and all-time top goalscorer will attract plenty of support at 5/1 in the Golden Boot market. Foden also enjoyed his best goal-scoring season to date with 19 Premier League goals in Manchester City’s title-winning campaign. Meanwhile in Spain, Bellingham’s return of 23 goals in all competitions helped steer Real Madrid to a Champions League / La Liga double.

The biggest challenge for Gareth Southgate and England will be finding the right balance as they look to accommodate so many exciting, in-form attacking midfielders. As well as Foden and Bellingham, Southgate has to try and find a spot for Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice in his starting XI.
