Mexico was not a part of the last two Copa America tournaments, and they are building up the roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup that they will co-host with the United States and Canada. Head coach Jaime Lozano made a bold move, cutting some of the most experienced players from the squad for the upcoming tournament. Among them is legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who has made 150 appearances for Mexico in the last 19 years. Hirving Lozano, Raul Jimenez, and Henry Martin are also being left out of the squad, and their international careers are most likely over.
Angel Malagon will be the one filling Ochoa’s shoes. Club America’s goalkeeper made his debut for the national squad last year and is seen as Mexico’s starting goalie for years to come.
Orbelin Pineda is the key player in the Mexican midfield, with 68 international appearances. He has had a solid season with Greek side AEK Athens. Uriel Antuna is the player with the most goals in the current squad, with 13. The 26-year-old rejuvenated his career when he joined Cruz Azul in 2022 and can be efficient playing multiple positions in Lozano’s formation.
Santiago Jimenez is a rising star in Mexican football, as the 23-year-old scored 38 goals for Dutch club Feyenoord in the last two seasons. He and Alexis Vega from Monterrey will be the pair in Mexico’s offensive line.
Edson Alvarez from West Ham United, Johan Vasquez from Genoa, and Censar Montes from Almeria are coming from solid seasons in Europe and will try to transfer that form to the national team.
Mexico at Copa America
Mexico missed the last two tournaments played in Brazil and is back at the Copa America for the first time since 2016. They made it to the finals of the competition in their debut in 1993 and 2001 and lost in the semis in 1997, 1999, and 2007. Claudio Suarez is their all-time leading scorer at the Copa America with 21 goals.
Mexico recent form
Mexico has five wins, three draws, and two losses in their last ten games. They lost 2-0 to the United States in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League. In their last game, they won 1-0 against Bolivia in a friendly.
Neymar and Richarlison are out for Brazil
Brazil will be without the striking pair from the last World Cup. Neymar has been injured for a while now, and Richarlison did not have a good year with Tottenham. Anyway, whoever plays for Brazil, they will be among the top favourites to win.
Vinicius Junior won every possible trophy with Real Madrid last season and can score at will against any team in the world. He and Rodrygo have been playing next to each other in Madrid for a while now and will be the key players in Brazil’s offense. Gabriel Martinelli made a name for himself at Arsenal, and Raphinha is another reliable option for head coach Dorival Junior.
Lucas Paqueta was one of the best players for Brazil in the last World Cup and is one of the five midfield players who are coming from the English Premier League. Eder Militao from Real Madrid and Marquinhos from PSG are the key players on the defensive end. Ederson from Manchester City and Alisson from Liverpool make the best goalkeeping pair in the world of football.
Brazil at Copa America
Brazil hosted the last two Copa Americas tournaments. In the last one in 2021, they lost to Argentina in the final, and in 2019, they won their ninth title in the continental competition. Zizinho leads the team with 33 appearances and 17 goals at the Copa America.
Brazil recent form
Brazil has four wins, four losses, and two draws in their last ten games. They lost three consecutive games in the World Cup qualifiers against Argentina, Colombia, and Uruguay, scoring only one goal in that stretch. They bounced back with a 1-0 win over England in a friendly game and played 3-3 against Spain in the last one.
Mexico V Brazil Head-to-Head
Brazil leads the all-time series, winning 24 games, Mexico has 10 wins, and 7 games have finished in a draw. Since the year 2000, these two teams have played 15 times, both of them won on six occasions, while three games ended in a tie.
It’s been a while since their last game, which took place in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup. Brazil won 2-0, with Neymar and Firminho scoring. The last time Mexico defeated Brazil was in a friendly game in 2016, when the score was 2-0 for the Tricolori.
Mexico V Brazil Prediction
With less than two weeks until the start of the Copa America, Mexico and Brazil are entering the final stage of preparations. This will be a real spectacle at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, the home of Texas A&M University. Both teams have made significant changes lately, and this game will give the coaches a clear picture of who they can count on for the start of the continental competition. Given the odds, Brazil is the favourite to win, but Mexico has shown many times before that they can beat any team in the world. Brazil have better individuals and will have control of possession for most of the game, while Mexico will try to keep the ball away from their penalty box. Looking back at their previous head-to-head games, the last five have seen less than 2.5 goals, and in none of those games, both teams scored. This will be another tight game without many goals, so we go with under 2.5 in total.
