Porta Fortuna Eyes Back-to-Back Royal Ascot Wins

Guineas Runner-Up Set for Victory Bid, Target Yet to be Decided
The 1,000 Guineas runner-up Porta Fortuna will aim to replicate her Royal Ascot success from last year for Donnacha O'Brien as connections deliberate whether to take on the colts in the Commonwealth Cup on Friday or stick to a mile in the Coronation Stakes on the same day.
The Caravaggio filly won four of her seven starts as a juvenile, including a Group 3 at Naas, the Albany Stakes, and the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes before securing second place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf over a mile.
She was narrowly defeated by a neck by the Roger Varian-trained Elmalka in the Guineas under Tom Marquand. O'Brien commented: "Ascot is the plan with Porta Fortuna, but we're still undecided on which race. She'll remain entered in both the Coronation and the Commonwealth. She's in good form. She ran very well in the Guineas and Tom gave her a lovely ride."
O'Brien was pleased with how she handled the mile in the Guineas and, should she run in the Coronation Stakes, her rivals are set to include Elmalka, as well as Fallen Angel and Opera Singer, who finished first and third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
"Most of her wins have been over six furlongs, but I don't think you could say she didn't stay the mile at Newmarket," O'Brien said. "They went at a good pace, and obviously Newmarket is a fairly stiff mile as they get racing early.
"Her ideal distance might end up being somewhere in the middle, but there's no real race that suits at Royal Ascot except for the Jersey, and we want to keep her in Group 1s. We're undecided which race we'll choose, but we think she's very versatile."
O'Brien is also likely to be represented by Naval Force in the King George V Stakes Handicap over a mile and a half on the Thursday of the royal meeting. The three-year-old has won two of his three starts, most recently at Roscommon where he defeated Action Plan by half a length.
