Euro 2024 Group Stage Preview: Group F
Below we’ll run the rule over all four countries drawn in Group F, providing squad updates, insights and fixtures as well as the latest group and outright odds
Group F is the final group in our Euro 2024 group stage preview with four more hopeful nations set to contest another competitive looking group. Below we’ll run the rule over all four countries drawn in Group F, providing squad updates, insights and fixtures as well as the latest group and outright odds courtesy of our betting partners at Coral.
Turkey
Turkey were seen by many as dark horses for the last European Championships but endured a disastrous tournament and exited at the group stage with three defeats in three. Turkey qualified for this summer’s tournament by finishing top of the qualification group ahead of the likes of Croatia and Wales however they head to Germany in poor form. The March international break produced back-to-back defeats against Hungary (1-0) and Austria (6-1) before playing out a 0-0 draw against Italy earlier this week.
Hakan Calhanoglu will captain the side on the back of an excellent title-winning season at Italian giants Inter Milan whilst Euro 2024 should represent a breakthrough tournament for many of Turkey’s next generation. Real Madrid’s 19-year-old sensation Arda Guler is the standout prospect but the likes of Kenan Yildiz, Can Uzun and Ahmetcan Kaplan have enjoyed stellar seasons at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Georgia
Georgia are the lowest ranked nation at this summer’s European Championships having qualified for their first ever major tournament as an independent nation via the play-offs. Georgia had finished fourth in their qualification group behind Spain, Scotland and Norway but earned a play-off spot by winning their UEFA Nations League group. A 2-0 win against Luxembourg was followed by a play-off final penalty shootout win over Greece.
The star player in the Georgian squad is undoubtedly Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Naples and this summer offers an opportunity for him to really put himself in the shop window.
Portugal
Portugal were the standout team in qualification as they won all ten group games with both the most potent attack and meanest defence. Across their ten matches Portugal scored 36 goals and conceded just two.
This summer may prove to be the final time we see Cristiano Ronaldo on the international stage. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be 41 years old by the time we head to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Portuguese captain will be determined to bow out on a high in Germany. Ronaldo scored ten goals in qualification and has amassed a staggering 128 goals in 206 internationals for Portugal. Ronaldo is amongst the favourites to win the Golden Boot at 12/1.
However, this Portuguese side is far from a one-man team as the 2016 European champions boast tremendous strength in depth. Premier League fans will see plenty of familiar faces in Roberto Martinez’s squad including the likes of Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Matheus Nunes, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and Manchester United duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.
Goncalo Ramos has 8 goals in 12 internationals and is the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo’s centre forward spot for the national team whilst Joao Neves and Francisco Conceicao are amongst the hottest young talents in world football.
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic qualified for their eighth straight European Championships as runner up behind Albania in their qualifying group, winning four and losing just one of their eight group matches. The Czech Republic have kicked off 2024 with three straight wins in friendly matches against Norway (2-1), Armenia (2-1) and Malta (7-1)
Patrick Schick finished Euro 2020 as joint-top goalscorer but only returned from a year on the sidelines last November. Schick went on to enjoy a superb domestic season at Bayer Leverkusen and the 28-year-old’s long road back to fitness could see him play a starring role for his nation at Euro 2024
