The Venue
The Pinehurst Resort is an incredible venue that houses no fewer than nine 18-hole courses as well as various restaurants, hotels, villas and condos. Course 2 will stage this year’s US Open and is widely considered as one of the best courses in the USA and has previously staged four golf majors. The 1939 PGA Championship was held at Pinehurst no. 2 as were the US Opens of 1999, 2005 and 2014.
The Market Leader
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the bookies’ red-hot favourite to win at Pinehurst this week having warmed up for the US Open by winning the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament at the weekend. The world number one arrives at Pinehurst in ominous form with his last eight tournaments producing five wins, two second place finishes and one eighth place. Scheffler has placed in each of the last three US Open Championships, finishing third in 2023 and the American will undoubtedly be the one to beat this week.
Major Players
Xander Schauffele won an elusive first major by storming the PGA Championship glory in record-breaking style. Schauffele’s 21-under par score was the lowest score ever recorded in a major championship and he is more than capable of kicking on once again this week. Xander Schauffele has an impressive record at the US Open and has never finished below 14th in seven previous entries.
Whilst Xander Schauffele’s win at Valhalla last month was his first major triumph, the American has been as consistent as anyone in majors in recent years. Schauffele has placed inside the top 20 in 21 of his last 28 majors, including 13 top ten finishes.
Collin Morikawa finished just one shot behind Scottie Scheffler at the Memorial at the weekend as he was right in contention at the PGA Championship before a disappointing fourth round. Morikawa was tied for first after 54 holes at Valhalla but a fourth round score of 71 saw him finish tied-fourth. Morikawa has now finished in the top four in each of this year’s majors and looks a solid option at Pinehurst.
An Outside Chance
Patrick Cantlay has gone nearly two years without winning a tournament of any note but he is nearly always there or thereabouts when the US Open comes around. The world number nine has finished in the top fifteen in three straight US Open tournaments whilst he has never missed the cut in the competition.
Will Zalatoris missed the whole of 2023 through injury but the three-time major runner up could be set for another big performance this week. Zalatoris tied for ninth at the Masters and has placed in the top ten in seven of the last eleven majors he’s been involved in. The Masters aside, this year Zalatoris has often struggled in his first and last rounds, highlighted by his 74-70-73-79 card at the Memorial and 71-68-69-70 score at the PGA Championship. If he can maintain the form shown regularly in the middle 36 holes, he could make light work of his odds.
