The second match in Group A of Euro 2024 will take place in Cologne on Saturday as Hungary and Switzerland clash in their opening game of the tournament. As we look forward to this crucial group stage fixture, here at betting.bet you will find enhanced in-depth match insights and expert betting tips as well as the latest pre-match odds and offers from our partners at Betfred.

Form

Hungary rounded off their Euro 2024 preparations with a comfortable 3-0 win against Israel, their fourth win in five internationals. A recent friendly defeat at Republic of Ireland will not diminish the confidence of the in-form Hungarians and they arrive in Germany in solid form. That loss at the Republic of Ireland was Hungary’s second defeat in 20 internationals. During this time they have recorded wins over Turkey, Serbia (twice), England and Germany.

Switzerland were crushed 6-1 by Portugal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup but they have bounced back since to lose just one of their subsequent 12 internationals. However, six of their last nine matches have ended in a draw.

Hungary v Switzerland: Head-to-Head

Hungary have won 30 of their previous 46 matches against Switzerland however the majority of those wins came during the nation’s golden era, winning 17 and drawing one of their 18 meetings between 1940 and 1989. Switzerland have won their last three meetings, most recently when winning 5-2 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in October 2017.

Betting Tips

Scoring goals has been a real concern for Switzerland in recent matches. The Swiss have failed to score in two of their last three internationals and have not scored more than one goal in any of their last five matches. Neither nation will want to lose their opening fixture which could open the door for a cagey encounter. The draw could be a solid betting option at 9/4 whilst under 2.5 match goals is our bet of the day at 8/13.

Despite enduring a fairly average first season in the Premier League, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai remains the talisman for Hungary. The 23-year-old has 12 goals in 42 internationals, including four in his last five. Szoboszlai is 3/1 to score at any time on Saturday however with goals expected to be at a premium in Cologne, we prefer the 15/2 on offer for the Hungary captain to score first.
