Match Day One Recap
Any pre-tournament nerves for the hosts were well and truly eradicated on Friday as Germany raced into a 2-0 lead after just 19 minutes in their opening Group A fixture against Scotland thanks to goals from two of their most celebrated young prospects, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Kai Havertz scored a third on the stroke of half-time after Scotland had been reduced to ten men. Substitutes Niklas Fullkrug and Emre Can added two more in the second half before an 87th Antonio Rudiger own-goal handed Scotland a late consolation.
Hungary lost 3-1 to Switzerland in a hard-fought opening match on Saturday. The Swiss took the lead through surprise starter Kwadwo Duah before Michel Aebischer doubled Switzerland's lead right on the stroke of half-time. Barnabas Varga pulled a goal back for Hungary midway through the second half but Breel Embolo stepped off the bench to claim all three points for Switzerland.
Germany v Hungary: Head-to-Head
The head-to-head record between Germany and Hungary is surprisingly well-balanced with Germany just edging it with 13 wins to Hungary’s 12 (plus 12 draws). An Adam Szalai strike gave Hungary a 1-0 win in the most recent meeting between these two nations. That shock win for Hungary came in September 2022 in the UEFA Nations League.
Hungary are actually unbeaten in three matches against Germany with two drawn games preceding that Nations League win. The first of those two draws came in the group stage of the last European Championships as the sides shared a 2-2 draw in Munich. Szalai and Andras Schafer had twice given Hungary the lead only to be pegged back by goals froim Kai Havertz and Leon Goretzka.
Team News
Niklas Fullkrug will be pushing to start on Wednesday after making a goal-scoring appearance from the bench against Scotland. However, Julian Nagelsmann is likely to avoid rocking the boat by naming an unchanged lineup against Hungary.
Hungary are likely to be without Loic Nego and Callum Styles once again on Wednesday. Like Germany, they may opt for an unchanged starting XI although Bendeguz Bolla could be preferred to Attila Fiola on their right-hand side.
Predicted Line Ups
Germany: Neuer, Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Mittelstadt, Andrich, Kroos, Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz, Havertz
Hungary: Gulacsi, Orban, Lang, Szalai, Bolla, Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez, Sallai, Szoboszlai, Varga
Betting Tips
Germany started their tournament in ominous fashion and despite a poor recent record against Hungary, the hosts should make it two wins from two on Wednesday. Germany look good value for the three points at 2/7.
There were ten goals scored in the opening two matches in Group A and whilst Germany netted five times against Sctoaldn, Hungary shipped three goals against Switzerland. Over 2.5 match goals is a solid option at 4/7 whilst over 3.5 match goals could prove excellent value at 11/8.
Friday offered Germany a near-perfect start to their Euro 2024 campaign, the only negative would’ve been their failure to keep a clean sheet. We’re backing Julian Nagelsmann’s side to right that wrong on Wednesday and Germany to win to nil is our bet of the day at odds of 19/20.
Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz were the stars of the show in Munich and Germany’s dynamic duo will once again prove a real danger on Wednesday evening. However, Kai Havertz is the man we’re tipping to score against Hungary. Fullkrug is breathing down Havertz’s neck for a starting berth and the Arsenal man will need a goal from open play to cement his place in the Germany starting XI. Below are a few markets where backing Havertz could be a sensible option.
Kai Havertz to score | Odds |
---|---|
To score at any time | 6/5 |
First goalscorer | 4/1 |
Last goalscorer | 4/1 |
To score 2 or more | 13/2 |
To score a hat-trick | 25/1 |
Score or assist | 8/11 |
