Euro 2024: Scotland v Switzerland - Match Preview & Odds

There’s a key Euro 2024 fixture taking place in Cologne on Wednesday as Scotland take on Switzerland in Group A. Here at betting.bet we’ll look ahead to this crucial match, offering the latest team news, match insights and betting tips as well as generous free bet offers and odds from our betting partners at bet365.

Scotland Must Bounce Back

Scotland’s Euro 2024 dreams turned into a nightmare last Friday as they were humbled by hosts Germany in Munich. The Tartan Army travelled in their thousands for the tournament’s opener but found their side a goal down inside ten minutes. By half-time they were 3-0 down and reduced to ten men following a red card for defender Ryan Porteous.

Friday’s tournament opener would eventually end 5-1 and from a Scotland perspective, the match stats were damning. Germany had 72.8% possession and attempted 20 shots on goals compared to just one for Scotland.

Swiss Tails Up

Switzerland got their tournament off to the best possible start as they overcame a plucky Hungarian side to win 3-1 in Cologne on Saturday. The Swiss just edged the possession stats but had the majority of the game’s best scoring chances. Switzerland’s goal scorers included surprise starter Kwadwo Duah, Michel Aebischer and substitute Breel Embolo.

Team News

Ryan Porteous’ two-game ban means Steve Clarke will make one enforced change to the team that kicked off the tournament on Friday. However, the Scotland boss is likely to shake up his starting XI after a nightmare start to the group.

Scott McKenna slotted into the Scottish defence following the dismissal of Porteous and he or Grant Hanley will be selected from the start on Wednesday. Che Adams was given the nod over Lawrence Shankland for the Germany game but after a poor performance, Adams may make way for Shankland against Switzerland. Billy Gilmour was arguably the most notable omission from the Scottish starting lineup last Friday and the Brighton midfielder may earn a recall on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s fixture may come too soon for either Denis Zakaria or Steven Zuber but both could feature from the bench at least for Switzerland. Kwadwo Duah should retain his place at centre forward despite Breel Embolo coming off the bench to score Switzerland's third against Hungary. Embolo has played very little football over the past year and may not be ready to start against Scotland.

Predicted Line Ups

Scotland: Gunn, Hendry, McKenna, Tierney, Ralston, Gilmour, McTominay, Robertson, McGinn, Christie, Shankland

Switzerland: Sommer, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez, Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer, Vargas, Ndoye, Duah

Scotland v Switzerland: Head-to-Head

The last international fixture played between these two nations came more than 18 years ago as Switzerland claimed a 3-1 friendly win over Scotland at Hampden Park in March 2006. The last competitive international between the sides came in Euro ‘96 with Scotland emerging as 1-0 winners thanks to a first-half Ally McCoist goal.

Betting Tips

After their disastrous start to the tournament, Scotland’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage are hanging by a thread and unfortunately, we’re expecting Switzerland to prove too good for Steve Clarke’s side on Wednesday. The match won’t be as one-sided as Friday’s 5-1 drubbing against Germany but Switzerland look good value for the win at 5/6.

Scotland offered next to nothing in an attacking sense against Germany and whilst Ryan Porteous’ red card was a major factor, we’re not convinced the outcome would’ve been too different if they finished with eleven men on the pitch. Switzerland to win to nil could prove a shrewd bet at 7/4 but we certainly like the 8/11 on offer for under 2.5 match goals.

England-born Kwadwo Duah justified his place in the Swiss starting lineup against Hungary and could prove a major goal scoring threat to Scotland in Cologne. The 27-year-old has hit double-figures for goals in three straight seasons in three different countries and is incredible value at 11/4 to score at any time against Scotland. However, with goals expected to be limited on Wednesday, Duah to score first could prove a better option at 13/2.
