Euro 2024: Poland v Austria - Match Preview & Odds

Poland and Austria play their second Euro 2024 fixtures on Friday with both nations still searching for the first points in Group D after opening weekend defeats. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview what is now a crucial fixture in Berlin, providing the latest team news, enhanced match insights and expert betting tips as well as the latest match odds and free bet offers from our partners at BetVictor.

First Match Recap

Both Poland and Austria would’ve anticipated a tough opening weekend against European heavyweights Netherlands and France and with third place potentially enough to progress, each nation would’ve earmarked Friday’s fixture as arguably the most important group game they’d play.

Poland kicked off their tournament with a spirited performance against the Netherlands. Adam Buksa put Poland ahead in the 16th minute but goals for Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst turned the match on its head and the Netherlands claimed a deserved 2-1 win.

Austria started their Euro 2024 group against one of the bookies’ outright favourites and Ralf Ragnick’s side pushed France all the way in Dusseldorf on Monday. Only a Maximillian Wober own-goal could separate Austria and France as France emerged as 1-0 winners.

Poland v Austria: Head-to-Head

The last three international matches contested by these two nations have all come in European Championship matches. A last gasp Austrian penalty saw their Euro 2008 group match end in a 1-1 draw whilst the nations were grouped together in qualification for Euro 2020. Poland earned a 1-0 win away in Vienna whilst they played out a goalless draw in the return fixture in Warsaw. Both sides would eventually qualify for Euro 2020 but it was Poland that progressed as group winners.

Team News

Lewandowski in line to return for Poland
Lewandowski in line to return for Poland

The big decision for Poland head coach Michal Probierz is at centre forward with captain and all-time record goalscorer Robert Lewandowski set to be available for selection after missing the Netherlands game through injury. Replacement Adam Buksa scored his 7th goal in 16 internationals on Sunday and can count himself unfortunate if he drops out of the starting XI on Friday.

Karol Swiderski was also not fit enough to start against the Netherlands but did feature off the bench in Hamburg. The Verona attacker may be preferred to youngster Kacper Urbanski in attack.

Marko Arnautovic came through the final 30 minutes of Monday’s defeat to France unscathed and the 35-year-old could get the nod to start against Poland. Arnautovic has endured an injury-disrupted few months at Inter Milan but if ever there was a game to risk the most-capped player in Austrian football history, this is probably it.

Predicted Line Ups

Poland: Szczesny, Bednarek, Salamon, Kiwior, Frankowski, Szymanski, Romanczuk, Zielinski, Zalewski, Swiderski, Lewandowski

Austria: Pentz, Posch, Danso, Wober, Mwene, Seiwald, Grillitsch, Laimer, Baumgartner, Sabitzer, Arnautovic

Betting Tips

Austria’s spirited performance against France coupled with their recent good form is enough to suggest they’ll get the better of Poland on Friday. Austria are good value for the win at 20/21. However, Poland know that a defeat will all but eliminate them from the competition and will go for broke against Austria. Both teams to score and over 2.5 match goals are equally attractive options at 3/4 or 10/11 respectively.

Robert Lewandowski may well start amongst the substitutes on Friday but if he is selected from the start, he will undoubtedly prove popular in the various goalscorer markets. Lewandowski has an incredible 82 international goals in 150 matches for Poland, including three goals at Euro 2020. You can back the Barcelona forward at 4/1 to score first or 6/4 to score at any time.
