Netherlands kicked off their tournament with a 2-1 win over Poland in Hamburg. Ronald Koeman’s side fell behind to a Adam Buksa strike but hit back with a goal in either half from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst. On balance, the Dutch were worthy winners having had 21 shots on goals to Poland’s 12 with 65.8% possession.

France also earned all three points in their opening match but did not have it all their own way against a spirited Austria side. France won 1-0 thanks to a Maximilian Wober own-goal and had several chances to win as they recorded 14 shots to Austria’s six. However it was Austria that shaded the possession stats with 51.9% possession and there would’ve been few complaints had they snatched a draw in Dusseldorf.

France have an excellent recent record against the Netherlands, winning seven of the last eight meetings between these two European giants. The nations were drawn together in qualification for Euro 2024 and France won both home and away as they topped the group.

Team News

The major talking point in the buildup to Friday’s match is the fitness of French talisman Kylian Mbappe. The 25-year-old sustained a broken nose in the win over Austria and if he does start against the Netherlands he’s likely to do so in a protective face mask. If Mbappe is not cleared to play then France’s all-time top scorer Olivier Giroud should feature from the start.

The Netherlands should have a clean bill of health with Brian Brobbey reported to have recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the win against Poland. The major dilemma for Dutch boss Ronald Koeman is up front. Memphis Depay wasn’t at his best against Poland whilst Wout Weghorst stepped off the bench to net the match winner. Koeman is likely to persist with Depay over Weghorst for one more match at least.

Despite a wealth of options in attack, Didier Deschamps has often been accused of being far too pragmatic with his tactics. From a neutral point of view, an early Netherlands goal is just what this game would need to really light the touchpaper. The Dutch are priced at 6/1 to score within the first 15 minutes.

The two qualification matches between these two nations produced seven goals. Over 2.5 match goals could be a wise bet 19/20 whilst both teams to score is solid value at 3/4.

Kylian Mbappe scored four goals in two qualifying matches against Netherlands and if the French captain is passed fit on Friday he’ll be the red-hot favourite in the various goalscorer markets. Below are just some of the markets where Mbappe should be given some real consideration.

For the Netherlands, Memphis Depay is closing in on Robin van Persie’s all-time goalscoring record but he needs a big performance on Friday if he is to retain his place in the Dutch starting XI. Depay could prove real value at 12/5 to score at any time on Friday.
